No. I think Sean Connery's quirky nature, the availability of certain herbal supplements (it was 1974), an opportunity for propinquity with leading lady Charlotte Rampling, and a chance to show, in the immediate post-Bond era, that he could save a $1-million movie on his own, may have contributed to Zardoz.

Or maybe he just liked the red diapers.

I watched it once, just so I could say I've watched it.

I couldn’t remember the plot (or if there was one), so I just looked it up. I think this sentence from the plot summary sums up why Zardoz isn’t on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 Greatest Movies:

“As Zed divines the nature of the Vortex and its problems the Eternals use him to fight their internecine quarrels.”
