Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is intervening in the Virginia presidential primary dispute and plans to file emergency legislation to address the inability of most Republican presidential candidates to get their name on the ballot, Fox News has learned. Only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul qualified for the Virginia primary, a contest with 49 delegates up for grabs. The failure of other candidates to qualify -- notably Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry -- led to complaints that the 10,000-signature requirement is too stringent. Cuccinelli, who is a Republican, shared the concerns. "Recent events have underscored that our system is deficient," he said in a statement. "Virginia owes her citizens a better process. We can do it in time for the March primary if we resolve to do so quickly." Cuccinelli's proposal is expected to state that if the Virginia Board of Elections certifies that a candidate is receiving federal matching funds, or has qualified to receive them, that candidate will upon request be automatically added to the ballot. Two former Democratic attorneys general are also backing the move, along with a former Democratic state party chairman and a former Republican state party chairman. Former state Attorney General Tony Troy called the Virginia process a "legal and constitutional embarrassment."

Let’s not write off Bolling as irrelevant. Only days before the RPV verification, he won a suit filed by Dems about his being the tie-breaking vote in the evenly divided State Senate. So he will remain a key figure in VA politics for the next few years.
In the last general election for Gov/Lt Gov/AG, IIRC, Cuccinelli got the highest vote of the 3, tho all did well. Cuccinelli also managed to survive a virtual sweep by Dems of Northern VA some years back. He will get more attention (or notoriety) in March when he argues the VA case against Obamacare at the Supreme Court. So, he is well positioned to win the GOP nomination for governor in ‘13. But it won’t be pretty.
Before Cuccinelli’s announcement about this route to a resolution, the Gov said he would be interested in viable alternatives; the state party chair said he would work with the legislature to change the law, so I would imagine he’d be on board. I’m not sure how ANY wing of the GOP in VA stands to gain by not changing the statute.
They want to cry, moan and carry on in this thread, like they have been suddenly neutered by this new statue of the Gov. of Va., (well I suppose they have/will be neutered, LOL).
When at some point their man/woman is subjected to such as not being on a ballot, think they will be crying/moaning to us?? Yet, it will be us who will stand up for their rights to be on a ballot, but we will then have the right to CRAM their moaning and groaning down their throats.

Virginia’s governor doesn’t want Newt in the race. Newt was leading in the polls by 5% so I would bet Rove and others were also involved (behind the scenes) with ways to eliminate Gingrich and even Perry.
Also, on Weds., the republican party of Va came up with a new “oath” where voters have to promise to support the republican nominee. Now, I did hear Newt’s name come up on Fox and naturally they mentioned that Newt stated publicly that he would NOT vote for Paul IF Paul was the nominee. Since Gingrich is a Va voter...he will have to back track on his words in order to vote. Everything is a type of petty fix to make the man look bad. I am fed up and disgusted with the Romney lovers trying to pull every dirty trick in the book and than some...

Obama won Virginia, and I would think GOP would pull out all the stops to enable Republican candidates to appear on the ballot as well as encouraging GOP voter turnout.
Romney has been a done deal for months.

Additionally, the Virginia GOP and other state GOPs need to challenge Ron Paul’s claim to be a Republican, when he is Libertarian. He should not be able to run as Republican.

The confusion about this has arisen because it’s the Party that counts and certifies the vote and in October the R Party told the candidates it would verify all their signatures unless they had at least 15,000.
It’s the duty of the Party to attest that the candidate has gotten the 10,000 signatures from qualified voters as the law requires.
Of course the Party could just lie to the state.
But I don’t want to think Perry or Gingrich were counting on the Party evading the law.
I think they just didn’t appreciate the task before them.
I just got off the phone with a friend who went home to the Tidewater over Christmas. She says everyone she spoke to is angry that Mitt and Ron are the only two on the ballot. I think they are leaning Perry.
I can give you a report from the Valley in a few days once my mother gets settled back in. She was away from the Commonwealth when this ballot decision was made.
Cuccinelli was one of the moderators on Huckabee’s Fox debate last month. I guess he’d feel pretty stupid if he moderated a debate and most of the candidates didn’t even make it on his state’s ballot.

I think this is a misquote or possibly a ‘mis-speak’.
I know he has said: ‘“I think [A] former governor ought to be the next president of the United states,”’
several times.
He shmoozes Perry too:

Bob McDonnell, who noted that he had not yet endorsed in the presidential race said earlier in the campaign that he preferred the GOP nominate a governor. I’d say he likes Romney, Perry ,Newt in that order- but would be comfortable with any.
I’m not crazy about the State intervening in Party matters. The GOP should make amends because they’ve acted stupidly, but for an elected official to use the weight of his office to change the decision of a private matter is not a good precedent.
