Iran claimed to have taken surveillance footage of a US aircraft carrier near the Strait of Hormuz as both countries raised the stakes in their standoff over the key oil route.

**************************************************

Video at the link:

***************************************

The commander of Iran's navy said the reconnaissance mission was proof that his fleet had "control over the moves by foreign forces" but it was unclear what intelligence could be derived from the grainy video, which was played triumphantly on state television.

No Ready Five.
Not much on the deck at all, so they must be all up.
I can’t imagine them running with reduced squadron sizing.

"I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to sink one of our carriers"

Absurd.

Why would Iran opt for Total War when they get most of what they want without it?

How does total war help Iran in any way?

No Fleet Commander can lose a carrier without firing everything he has. Everything.

Read this: http://ultimitempi.blogspot.com/2006/09/iran-ahmadinejad-and-12th-mahdi.html

Iran is led by a madman who believes that the 12th imam is going to emerge from a well in a dusty village in Iran. This will happen only after he brings a holocaust on the whole world. Nuking Israel or sinking a US carrier, it doesn't matter to him, whatever works.

Hitler WAS NOT as insane in 1939 as these people are now. We are in for a rough ride.

“Absurd.”

Know your enemy. The Iranians aren’t the model of logic. Their threats come in the face of new sanctions.

The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor under that kind of pressure.

It seems one of Iran’s goals is total dominance over the middle east. Sinking a US carrier would do much to further that goal.

Iran is unafraid of US retaliation. Our commander-in-chief is a joke.

A surprise submarine attack, (Iran does have subs), could greatly cripple, if not sink a carrier.

There are rules of engagement, even in the face of an attack. If a sub torpedoes a carrier, the Commander would have to be 100% sure of the attacker before a response. This would end up going back to the White House. The White House would involve the UN and that would lead to inaction.

Absurd? Maybe. Plausible? I think so.

Standoff!? There’s no standoff. If Iran attempts to stop US shipping, they go straight to Davy Jone’s locker.

Let me see if I have this straight... the iranians “Found” an object larger than a skyscraper, floating in a small body of water, where it was not even trying to hide...... hell, a 5 year old could do that

The Iranians are such pikers. I have a friend who's managed to take pictures of DOZENS of carrier transits through Hampton Roads. Or at least did until they closed down and bullozed that motel on Willoughby Spit.

"so they must be all up"

Not necessary.

The USAF has a few hundred aircraft in theater...Qatar, UAE etc.

They can provide cover in transit.

A CVN would NOT be running flight ops while transiting this narrow channel.

I want what you're smoking.

Sinking a Carrier would ENSURE the elimination of the Iranian regime and the seizure of all their real assets.

Are you all so unaware of US Military Doctrine as to not know this?

PRESIDENT OBAMA = Commander-in-chief of the United States Military forces... all of them.

Really?

Are you so unaware of who the president is that you need to ask me about military doctrine?

True. The paucity of aircraft on the deck could be indicative of having planes temporarily based ashore to provide the required top-cover.

Being pretty aware of who the President really is, I'd come down on the side of him removing Iran's leadership and its capability to wage war with extreme prejudice if a carrier took a hit.

Him doing anything OTHER than that would not only result in very-public mass resignations of high-level military leadership, but would also drive his public opinion negatives into the stratosphere ... making impeachment (on grounds of failure to act as CinC and gross incompetence/negligence) a real possibility. At the very least he'd get tossed out of office in a landslide in 2012, taking most of the rest of the Congressional Dem caucuses with him.

The guy is, at heart, a Chicago pol. And he WANTS that second term. He'd go "Chicago Way" on Ahmahandjob's a** so fast it'd make people's heads spin.

Kind of like how the US just kicked ass when the drone went down.

We lost our military sometime shortly after WWII. Since then the US military policy is simply show up with gear and allow the enemy to kill our troops, then pay the locals trillions to rebuild. Rarely we get lucky and take out a leader, but mostly we deliver million dollar pizzas to tribes of ungrateful reprobates.

Our military is utterly corrupt by political high ranking brass, and our troops have increasingly become drugged up criminal perverts who make sex toys out of livestock.

Meanwhile back in the States, we lie about our troops saying that they are "fighting for our freedom" when in fact the trillions spent wearing out our gear and cranking our thousands of dead and wounded is enslaving us to our creditors while we teach our domestic troops how to conduct effective urban warfare on American citizens and amp up the surveillance and control on the general public.

Those animals on that side of the planet routinely take US flagged ships with only one group ever intercepted, and our CiC is still apologizing and embarrassed over that interdiction. Meanwhile, the Israelis, Russians, Chinese and even the pacific Indians each gave the US a clinic on how to do it - to no avail since one might as well fly the white flag of surrender rather than the US colors.

Over a decade in Afghanistan, and our own soldiers are rebuked and disciplined by our own leaders for passing gas in the presence of a native tribesman, or the mortal sin of urinating in the direction of Mecca.

Our military is castrated and only serves as an incubator of technique and social engineering to further tyrannize US citizens.

Was this doctrine in place during the first months GWB’s first term when PRC pilot Wang Wei made three close passes in his J-8 jet fighter to the prop driven P3 Orion, resulting in a collision on the third pass?

The J-8 broke in two and the impact forced the P3 to land on Hainan Island. It was held captive while PRC PLA examined and stripped the sensitive and highly classified spy gear on board.

GWB, as CINC, showed a masterful display of the “patient inertion doctrine” until the PRC had gathered all they could and having milked the press magnanimously released the unharmed 23 airmen without pressing charges. The deft CINC then sent a letter of condolence to the widow of Air Bandit Wang Wei, who had achieved his objective albeit fatally inept for the task at hand.

That the doctrine you’re thinking of?

Of course, The Won would provide a truly world class performance of groveling before the insane mullah regime while whispering, “inshallah” to their shoes.

I am quite sure this has changed to a more pacifist position in the past couple of years. We no longer know what the true "Military Doctrine" is right now, which is fueling the speculation on the part of other posters on this thread.

This uncertainty and speculation is also driving the apparently insane activities on the part of the Iranians and other bad actors.

Can’t argue with that.

But it still may not preclude an attempt to sink a carrier. I’m not sure the Iranians have done the political calculus.

The differences between an unmanned drone or a single surveillance aircraft with ~20 or so crew aboard and a multi-trillion dollar, nuclear-powered national asset with over 6000 crew are pretty near incomprehensible from a magnitude standpoint.

The US has made it pretty clear over the years that our carriers are sacrosanct. Touch one of them and we will hit you like the fist of an angry god.

And I don’t mean that in the Lazamataz way.

"resulting in a collision on the third pass"

VQ-1's P-3C was not a Capital Ship carrying nuclear weapons.

This is a non sequitor.
