RelatedCRESTON, Iowa — Rick Perry began his final push in the Iowa Republican caucuses Tuesday by sharpening his claim to be the sort of leader the country badly needs, and which his rivals decidedly are not.
“You need to ask yourself: If we replace the Democrat insider with a Republican insider, is that going to change Washington, D.C.? No, it’s not,” he told 150 or so Iowans crammed into a coffee shop a week ahead of caucuses likely to winnow the presidential field. “I will go to Washington to be an anti-establishment outsider.”
At one stop after another, he jabbed at Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul with missives that mirror the pro-Perry ads flooding the state’s airwaves. It’s a rather different emphasis from the one Perry used to launch his White House quest — the promise to bring Texas’ job-creating magic to the national economy.

I’ll stack Rick Perry’s military service, farming labor and Texas political executive record against anyone of the others running (and their years of writing laws and/or supporting big government mandates).
My mom and dad are Texas born and bred. I was born in New York because my dad was flying interceptors for Air Defense Command/NORAD. I consider myself a Texan with a Certificate of Birth Abroad (military parents will understand the reference). And except for my time on active duty, I’ve lived here and loved it since my dad retired and they moved home in 1975.
I don’t know an expat Texan who doesn’t think it’s God’s country. And I think an independent spirit is VERY Texan, and that spirit doesn’t normally come in liberal sizes.

It is a job whether some people know it or not.
The children of illegal entrants, who are walked, driven or carried in arms over the border, are the ones who are allowed instate tuition rates if they have attended a Texas High School for three years and have graduated.
Federal law mandates they be educated in public schools, K-12, then dumps the problem of what to do with them after that onto the states where they live.
This will come as a huge shock, as correct information always does to someone who peddles the incorrect, but a child, brought here by an adult who is in charge of that child’s life, is not chargeable as an illegal entrant and is not deportable as such.
They are in a legal limbo...don’t have papers to say they should be here, but are not chargeable as illegal entrants and not deportable.
And they are in our public schools until graduation.
The question before the TX Legislature was, for tuition rates, are they considered out of state, or in state.
The bill designating them in state for tuition rate purposes passed with only 4 nays.
If they met the criteria.
The old saw that Perry gave instate tuition to ILLEGAL ALIENS is false.
As Perry has pointed out, it is the Federal Government’s responsibility to stop people from coming over the border illegally, and they have utterly failed.
Within one year of taking his hand off the Bible in swearing the oath, Perry as President will enforce the current laws on the books, and for the first time, secure the border.
Who are you for, and what have they done and what will they do to enforce our laws and secure the border?
Even if you think his position is extreme, it is sincere.
It’s not necessarily a position I believe in, but it doesn’t really matter. His credentials as pro-life are unimpeachable.

I resent Iowa also. Every four years they get lots of attention. The rest of the time they get the attention they deserve... which is none.
Only rarely does the Iowa winner go on to get the nomination.
It’s only important to Perry because a win there would get him some much needed attention from the press.
Fox news might even mention his name.

Being in the AF is also a JOB serving your country.
And when in the public sector, on the state level, what did the office holder do? His entire record, not singling out one or two mistakes. And what would he do if elected President?
If we could never vote for anyone who had ever been in government for a period of time, at any level, we would be in a world of hurt.
We desperately need people coming from the states to go in there and take on DC. It’s totally out of control and has been for years.
omigosh, I did not know that about Perry. If he lasted through the Southwestern experience, he can last through anything.
My son and several of his friends did that one summer. It was horrible. They only lasted a few weeks.

My husband lived for a while in Post, Texas.
Laura Bush was raised in El Paso and claimed the water there made everyone happy (it had lithium in it). I guess God thought if you lived in El Paso, you might as well have something.
I think Rick Perry is conservative and would make a great president. But enjoyed your post.
One point: This article is by Todd Gilman, a Perry hater from way back.
Perry has not bumped bellies with the Washington elites.
The people he’s talked to the most are Steve Forbes, John Bolton and the like.
He is a DC outsider, whatever you may say or think.
Yes, that is a point Monk either missed or decided to ignore.
Texas democrats back in the day were conservative. I watched my own family as they left the democrat party. They were always conservative. But when Texas democrats started to get as bad as the rest of the democrats, we all started voting Republican.
I won’t say the last democrat I voted for as it might date me a little too much.
I like Bush, but Perry is not Bush and I don’t know why you’re bringing Bush up.
The Bush family does not even support Perry. Long standing differences.

Go vote for Romney - oh, wait, he is a politican.

Santorum? Was a politician but couldn’t win his own state.
Bachmann? Currently serving in the U.S. House. Otherwise a non-politician.
Huntsman? Was a governor, later an ambassador for Obama.

I don’t know why the title of this thread seemed to attract a whole new (and even more clueless) group of Perry bashers.
Oh, well.
Something got lost there in his research, in the application of it to the real world.
From what he wrote, I think he would argue that how they voted for President and how much money they got in Ag subsidies would brand them as dependent on Washington, therefore, not conservative.
They voted for Democrats for President up to a point, then even they got fed up. It just took them longer to give up on that political party, because it was so deeply ingrained in them to vote that way.
As for Ag subsidies or other federal aid, Charlie Stenholm, and whoever held that seat before him, saw to it that federal money poured into that district.
That was the system for many, many years. The little people like the Perrys, tenant cotton farmers who were basically nobodys, did not initiate that system nor could they have done anything about it.
Eventually people like the Perry’s left the Democrats because the Democrats went so far astray away from American Values, most Texans simply couldn’t stomach it.
I think Monk got lost in his own rhetoric. It was a funny read, but in reality meant nothing.

I think Monk is one of those weirdo bushwackers with horns on his Cadillac and a rhinestone vest. A few too many doobies and cocktails got the better of him along the way.
