"General Washington and his troops had been defeated in September, driven from Brooklyn to Manhattan, from Manhattan to New York City, around the Palisades, across New Jersey. They declined from 30,000 troops in September to 2500 Effectives on Christmas Day.
Of the 2500, one-third did not have boots. They were wearing burlap bags wrapped around their feet, as they marched; they left a trail of blood.
General Washington knew that if he didn't win a victory soon, the entire army would disappear. And so he had to do something desperate. He proposed to cross an icy river, at night, in a snowstorm, and then march nine miles in the dark to the city of Trenton, a village that had 800 German troops, professional Hessians. He was going to surprise them, and capture them.
It was a very dangerous plan. Because it was harder to get there than they thought, they were four hours late. And yet, as a sign of Divine Providence, there was an enormous snowstorm coming from the North behind them, pushing them towards Trenton. A storm so enormous that the German troops said nobody could be out in this weather, so they didn't post guards. They didn't muster at dawn as they normally would, because it was impossible. And for Europeans, it probably was impossible.
But these were Americans. They were used to the American winter, they were used to deer hunting in the winter, they were used to travelling in the winter. This was just a terrible snowstorm. It wasn't a reason to stop.
Washington's troops surprised the Germans, captured 800 of them at the cost of one American, then ran for the river before the British Army could catch them, and went across the river with their prisoners. Within two weeks, 15,000 volunteers showed up, and Washington began driving the British across New Jersey.
The Revolution had been saved.
How big a gamble was it? That night, as they began to get in the boats, they were told that the password for that evening was "Victory or Death", and they meant it. They were prepared to give everything for freedom
Surely, in the most successful country in history, we can do what is necessary. We can be in the spirit of General Washington and the Americans who fought for freedom. We can go out, get the vote out, make the argument, and stand up for freedom. And I believe we can have as big an impact in helping America remain free in our generation, as they did in theirs."
You can watch the video at the “Newt 2012” link.
Yes but Obama is a constitutional scholar
And he was born in Hawaii.
PATENT BULLSHIT
“PATENT BULLSHIT”
No, not a patent Scholar a Contitutional scholar just like ole’ Bubba was.
Say what you will about the Newtster, there is no question that he believes in “American Exceptionalism” and that he is a patriot, unlike the the current holder of the White House.
Newt begs a comparison between himself and Washington by putting this video out. In that regard the video is an epic fail because while Newt Gingrich does have some intellectual comparisons with George Washington that is all he has.
Newt has no Martha Washington. Newt has no following that will stand with him through any battle. Newt does not have the absolute love of his countrymen. Unlike Washington Newt does not have the love of country first nor does Newt look at the Republic as something to serve. Instead, very unlike George Washington Newt Gingrich sees the Republic as a piggy bank from which to fill his pockets. Nobody would ever expect Newt Gingrich to give up his wealth for the rest of us. Nor risk his life without concern or thought about his own personal self.
As someone who has read extensively about George Washington I know that without question he is someone that we should all emulate. His love of God and country was as solid as the sunrise. Washington believed that there was an invisible hand looking out over this nation.
Newt has brought up a significant historical marker this Christmas season but not one that I needed pointed out. By bringing that marker up he errors because Newt is terribly lacking when it comes to any moral comparison to Washington. Newt is no George Washington.
With all that said any comparison of Obama to Washington puts Newt Gingrich in a place so far above Obama that Newt cannot be seen by the naked eye. Obama is a cartoon character compared to Washington. He is nothing. Zero. He is worse than a joke as is any comparison of Martha Washington to Michelle Obama. Using the names of the Obama ass clowns in the same breath as the Washington’s makes me want to puke.
Newt has done a good thing with this video. Some people need to be reminded about George Washington and his love of God and Country. Too many need to be taught this for the first time.
Pray for this nation!
I’m so tired of America and her history being dragged through the mud. It would be refreshing to have a President in office who valued the accomplishments of our Founders, instead of:
*Returning Churchill’s bust
*Arguing about the meaning of the word “is”
*Wholesale graft and corruption
*Socialism on parade
*Add your own pet peeve...
I didn’t take this as Newt comparing himself to Washington. Some people do not have the extra-deluxe super-egos we’ve long ago grown tired of.
Instead, I took this video as a direct response to those who say WE THE PEOPLE cannot have a real impact in this election.
Sure, Newt wants us to vote for him. But he interwove a terrific history lesson with a plea to not accept the status quo.
Newt’s got my vote!
The transcript is cut down quite a bit from a speech he made back in 2009. Many of us have seen this clip before but I will post the link below. I firmly believe this clip is more profound and touching than the video begging for votes. Newt is clearly speaking from the heart and the related material begins just after the 7 minute mark. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR2yfsgGYOU&list=FLGC_QO0AFl3LT18EcqRIhvQ&index=7&feature=plpp_video
I appreciate the link, but where’d you get the “begging”? I didn’t see any begging.
Backdoor campaigning.....all politicians “beg” for votes. Not an attack on Newt.....
Neither did George, not in 1776. It took him several more years to earn that love.
Newt has had ample time to instill such love and respect. He has not done so. Maybe he will....
Newt is a candidate for president. So he must be compared to Washington. And yes, to Obama. The latter is all that is necessary. The former is too but not as much.
Well-said, MissMagnolia.
