WASHINGTON >>The House rejected legislation to extend a payroll tax cut and jobless benefits for two months, drawing a swift rebuke from President Barack Obama that Republicans were threatening higher taxes on 160 million workers on Jan. 1.
Obama, in an appearance in the White House briefing room after the House vote today, said the two-month compromise is the only way to stop payroll taxes from going up by two percentage points.
"Now let's be clear," Obama said in a surprise appearance in the White House briefing room. "The bipartisan compromise that was reached on Saturday is the only viable way to prevent a tax hike on January 1st. The only one."
Obama said failure to pass the Senate version of the payroll tax cut extension could endanger the U.S. economic recovery, which he described as "fragile but moving in the right direction."
House Republicans controlling the chamber want instead immediate negotiations on a year-long plan with the Senate where the top Democrat again ruled out talks until the House passes the stopgap measure.
"President Obama needs to call on Senate Democrats to go back into session ... and resolve this bill as soon as possible," said House Speaker Boehner, R-Ohio. "I need the president to help out."

If we don’t get the 12 month extension it’ll be a disaster.
Otherwise people seeing that little extra in their check each week will be thanking us.
Of course the media will do what it can. Some people getting that cut will know where it came from.
Mister Obama planned an unusually long vacation in order to (intentionally) cut it short so as to make him seem like a victim/hero.
In other words, I suspect theatrics and deceit. It's really all they know.

If MO and the girls are in Hawaii, maybe Barak can have some of his butt buddies over for the holidays.
That is why I totally support Gingrich. He has the guts and the inside knowledge to rip Democrats and RINO Republicans a new one and get the House business done.
Plan to have housing industry pay for payroll tax cut passes Senate
Two-month extension would be funded by tacking extra fees onto Fannie and Freddie mortgages
The real ‘beauty’ here is when The House passed a bill Reid was able to say “DOA”.
So the pResident and Press got to say the R’s were stonewalling.
When The House said the Senate should maybe come back to ‘discuss’ the reasoning behind 2 months, again Reid say No way I am recalling and the pResident and Press again accuse the R’s of being uncooperative.
Am I (or we) missing something hear? Or is Reid calling ALL the shots?
All the GOP has to say is that their bill offers 6 times the relief. Your move RATs.
“Now let’s be clear,”
Drink.
They want an issue that keeps on giving. Trying to raise taxes on the wealthy.
Reid $X < Boehner $6X even Democrats can understand that.
I’m not sure why you think the Republicans are getting killed. The House already passed a bill with a 12 month tax cut. The Rat led Senate’s bill only has a two month tax cut, which is nearly impossible for employers to program into their payroll software.
I grant you that message is not getting out because Boehner is an idiot. Things would be much better if Newt were still Speaker.
I think that most people miss this point. It’s not exactly 2% for 2 months. People usually figure interest on a yearly basis or Annual Percent Rate (APR).
Let’s do the math. 2% for 2 months or 2/12 of a year! That’s a little more than .16% APR.

+++++++++++++++
You’re close. Your observation that the Dems always look the good guy is also correct, but it is the MSM that is calling the shots - and Harry Reid knows they have his back.
If the dems don’t cave and the republicans stand their ground, the tax break goes away and the republicans get the blame for raising taxes. And I truly believe the dems would do it because they sure as hell don’t care about anything but campaign issues to get obama re-elected.
If the republicans cave and they pass a 60 day extension there’s no way the dems can come back and vote against a year. If they did, they’d be taking responsibility for the tax hike.
YES! This is what I’ve been waiting to hear. Obama does not get to go to Hawaii for any of the 17 days. Really? I hope some of the Republicans can stay in DC and wait him out. I saw the interuption of the press conference this afternoon when te Won pushed aside his press sec to tell us all how it will be. I can’t wait for tomorrow.
