Republicans, Dissatisfied with Their Presidential Field, Dream of Deadlock (Our only hope?)

Is a brokered convention just a fantasy? A splintered Republican field and new party rules mean it just might happen.

With many (if not most) GOP voters harboring a “none-of-the-above” attitude toward the current crop of presidential contenders, insiders and activists have begun developing dreams of deliverance via deadlock and dark horses. The present state of the race, with four or more candidates drawing significant support in Iowa and elsewhere, raises the real possibility that no one aspirant will win a majority of delegates on the first ballot, creating an opening for some fresh face (Rubio? Christie? Mitch Daniels? Paul Ryan? Even Jeb Bush?) to emerge as the anointed nominee of a brokered convention.

The idea of some surprise selection that could unite a divided and dispirited party remains a longshot but more plausible than at any time in the past 60 years.

In 1952, the Democrats came to Chicago unimpressed with any of the candidates who had competed ferociously in the primaries and turned to the diffident, bookish governor of Illinois who hosted the convention, Adlai Stevenson, on the third ballot. Before the convention opened, Stevenson had insistently disavowed any interest in running for the nation’s highest office.

I have been calling for Rush to intiate a Republican Operation Chaos for the last two months! We need gridlock and 4-5 candidates hanging on till the convention. Then we can cast them all aside and talk somebody decent into taking the nomination.

Clearly the GOP is full of Obama backers! Anyone unhappy with the present field is voting for Obama!

Rush can’t do all the heavy lifting for us. We have to make sure we get as many Tea Partiers elected to Congress as possible as a hedge against a President Romney, Gingrich or Urkel.

talk somebody decent into taking the nomination.

Who? Christie, a RINO who doesn't want it? Palin? Pullleeze. Kasich? He'd lose his own state. Walker? Ditto.

The only possible names I can come up with are Marco Rubio and VA Gov. Bob McDonnell.

Marco Rubio

born May 28, 1971 in Miami, FL (Meets the Jus Soli Requirement)

Parents were
Mario Rubio born in Cuba, naturalized Nov. 5, 1975.
Oria Garcia born in Cuba, naturalized Nov. 5, 1975.

Parents were NOT US Citizens at the time of his birth (Does NOT meet the Jus Sanguinis Requirement)

Marco Rubio is NOT a NATURAL BORN CITIZEN.

Marco's status is the same as that of Barry Soetoro, aka Barack Hussein Obama, who is NOT a Natural Born Citizen.

The ratings for a brokered convention would be through the roof.

The surprise nominee would just need to deliver a stem winder of an acceptance speech to punch his ticket to the White House.

Could Bob McDonnell do that? Perhaps.

You are correct. Rubio can endorse but that’s about his topside in any presidential contest.

Paul Ryan is my choice. No east coast RINO will do. Ryan/Rubio would be a formidable ticket. Ryan would school Obama on economic issues in the debates and Rubio would make Biden look like the buffoon he is in their debate.

Exactly right! Getting the Senate is the key.

Also, we know Barry is spending millions digging up dirt on Newt and Romney. Imagine all that money and time wasted when the Republicans pick someone in August. Would make the Rats dirt digging much tougher work.

Sounds like fun to me, but it ain’t happening. When was the last time you ever saw a brokered convention? There’s talk about it every 4 years, but, it never happens. But, enjoy your dream.

I’d add Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) to that list.

I can’t stomach Mitt or Newt. If Perry can’t make a comeback, I hope for gridlock. Unfortunately, I think what will come out of gridlock will be Jeb Bush or Chris Christie. Sadly, buth are a better option.

Unless there is the second coming of Reagan, a brokered convention is dumb.

A) It almost certainly would end up with one of the current candidates anyway, and most likely Mitt.

B) It would likely make it even harder to unify for the general.

I’m with Sowell: the best outcome now is for the notRomney candidates to unify behind a single standard bearer with the rest dropping out in time to keep Romney from taking it in a repeat of the split votes of 2008.
