If it is an 809, 284, 649, or 876 area code, it is a scam from outside the US that results in huge charges placed on your phone bill.

Legitimate Collection Agencies don’t operate that way. Call the State AG’s office and Police.

Here is some info. They must have access to people's credit files somehow:

Sophisticated phone phishing scam....

Call the cops...
Tell them your privacy has been invaded...
You suspect your identity is being stolen...

--AND--
You are legitimately afraid for your personal security as well as your real and personal property.

Oh yeah...
....and load the 12ga...

If you have CALLER ID, don’t answer the phone when they call.

However, if you do want to answer the phone, tell the person you’re reporting them to your congressman.

Then call your congressman and give them all the info.

I did that once and never heard from them again.

Thanks all.
It is an 800#.I didn’t appreciate the veiled threats as to 2nd chance and,I(the caller) will be at your house and place of employment.
I did call the Sheriffs office to report the call and yes,the call was on a Friday and again today 12/19.The call comes through as an “out of area”,with no # given.
I do have a phone block on “NOW”.
I will have to see what happens between 12 and 5pm 12/20.

Get yourself caller ID or answering machine and don’t pick up any call unless you recognize the caller. The do not call list is not working and many of the spammers are now spoofing their phone numbers.

Do what I did once when my first wife returned a card offering her a free pair of panty hose as a sample. She received the hose along with a bill for same. I told her to return the card saying simply that this was a free sample and she had no intention of paying. After she did that they started sending the bill in my name! When I didn’t pay they threatened to ruin my credit. I took their bill and wrote a note on the back advising them that I was not and never had been in the habit of wearing panty hose and if they did anything to damage my credit rating by the time I got through they would think their tail got caught in a sewing machine! Amazingly it worked, I never heard from them again.

I got a call like that. I told them to come to my house and TRY to take me to the courthouse. I also added that if they did they better come armed because I`m a supporter of the 2nd amendment. They never showed up or called back.

I received a similar call the other day. They did not say the name or SSN they were calling about. My caller ID showed the number and I googled it to a debt agency in New York. I decided to call them and had my recorder running just in case it got fishy. It was about a previous owner of my home. I have owned the home for 7 years and used to regularly get notices about the previous owners. I was even served papers once for the previous owner.
The person on the phone was fine and when I explained the person in question was long gone they said they would remove my number. They did not say how they got my number. So far I have not been bothered since then.

get the alleged debt in writing, so u can verify if its fake or not. You never know, there could be some debts from years ago which got sold to CA,etc..
Point is they must give u a paper!

No, but despite being on the cell phone Do Not Call List, I get 5-15 sales calls a day.

If someone has filed a lawsuit against you, they will serve the papers. They don’t call you on the telephone to tell you because they must serve you properly.

Unless your employer is named in the lawsuit, there is no reason for the person who called you to mention them—other than to attempt to frighten you into doing what they want you to do which is to call some number.

In most jurisdictions the person serving you the papers has to hand them to you. Some jurisdictions allow service by registered mail.

It’s too bad the person did not identify him/herself and the law firm. From that I conclude it’s not a law firm that intends to serve you with the papers.

Some crooks are looking to find out when you will NOT be home so they can schedule that time to burglarize your home.

I would report the problem to the police immediately.

A few years ago I got a similar landline message from a bogus collection agency. As soon as I figured out the scam, I mentioned that “for training purposes” the call was being taped. CLICK! Never heard from ‘em again.

This is distantly related. ANSWER all unknown text messages with a “No”. I got one from some number I didn’t recognize and then got billed $10 a month for a “Horoscope”. I thought these “negative means yes” approaches (as in the old book/CD/Movie plans) were no longer legal, but with cell phones, if you don’t reply, you have ordered their useless service. Cell phone company says you can’t block them.

I got a call that was traced back to New York and was a known scam. I hung up right away and blocked them from calling or texting.

Dare her to show up. These thugs get people to give them money they DO NOT WOWE, out of threat and intimdation. Call he all kinds of nice foul words and get her pissed off and get her to to tell you more about herself and who she is calling for. They’ll do it, just get her riled up.

P.S. Legal service can only be made by a third party, not any collection agency itself, so you know they are lying.

Yes, reply to them excitedly and tell them that you want to get this debt taken care of right away. In the next 20 minutes, if possible. Then ask for their bank account number and routing ID so that you can deposit it directly. Tell them this is the only way you are set up to pay your bills, you don’t use checks any more.
