Leading a Republican Revolution to victory after 40 years of democrat rule is not conservative? Cutting the deficit and balancing the federal budget four years running is not conservative? Blocking socialist HillaryCare, reforming welfare and reducing unemployment are not conservative? Give me a break. I love Michelle’s constitutional stand on issues, but what great conservative feats has she actually accomplished?

He has someone else he supports, so that stuff gets overlooked.

Goodness knows Bachmann has nothing like that on her resume.

Not necessarily, no. It's only party labels, after all.

Cutting the deficit and balancing the federal budget four years running is not conservative? Blocking socialist HillaryCare, reforming welfare and reducing unemployment are not conservative?
It wasn't coupled with a significant reduction in the national debt (just a minuscule one), or a larger-scale reversal of welfare, or a reversal of the gutting of the military or the CIA, or a strengthening of foreign policy, or stopping our nuke secrets being handed to China and North Korea on a silver platter, or preventing the gutting of strategic infrastructure (ref. Alexander Hamilton's Report on Manufactures) so token stuff like that only goes so far and doesn't put a dent in the damage the liberals have done.

Sitting on a couch next to Princess Pelosi espousing the fraud known as global warming isn't conservative.

Campaigning for known liberal RINOs isn't conservative.

Supporting amnesty for illegals isn't conservative...

Even a broken clock is right 2 times a day.

This is not the world of 2008.

The situation is far more dire now than it was then.

Romney is a RINO, certainly not the champion that we need.

Newt is definitely NOT McCain. He in fact is the champion the times call for. Warts and all.

A few weeks ago I decided I would support Newt in spite of his warts.... now I support him because of many of them.

We need a fearless warrior of consummate skill and determination...Newt is that warrior!

I finished reading his paper on the judiciary last night. It is an absolutely brilliant piece of work! I recommend it highly. If Newt follows through on what is described there we will have a revitalized republic as a result.

The point is that the list on the other side -- the list of un- or anti-conservative acts is also long, and MORE RECENT.

Yes, Gingrich should receive credit for the things you mentioned, but they also should be viewed in perspective:

For example:

Blocking socialist HillaryCare, reforming welfare and reducing unemployment are not conservative?

On Hillarycare, for example: Doctors to Gingrich: Republicans Need to Repent on "Healthcare": Newt Gingrich and other Republicans promise to repeal ObamaCare, but doctors remember what they did in 1996. Just after they “defeated” ClintonCare, they changed its name and enacted the very worst parts of it.

On reforming welfare, here's what Gingrich did:

The first bill Gingrich got passed was vetoed by President Clinton.

What happened next?

Gingrich and the GOP caved. They added in BILLIONS in NEW ENTITLEMENT SPENDING, including federally-funded child care ($14 billion in 1996 dollars alone for this), new Medicaid eligibility, job subsidies, etc.

President Clinton then signed the new bill because, he said, it now included "his improvements" (billions in new entitlement spending, above).

So this reform was passed the old-fashioned way: the GOP bought it. Moreover, some economists believe that 40-80% of the people who moved off welfare after this "reform" did so purely because the U.S. entered the longest, biggest economic boom in the post-WWII era.

On reducing umployment, see the point above. This also was part of the boom that was started by Ronald Reagan's tax cuts, among other things, and which "lifted all boats."

This isn't to suggest conservative ideals and strong conservative leadership had nothing to do with these events. It's just to state that they themselves also provide perspective in terms of how much of a pass Gingrich should be given for subsequent un-conservative things he has pursued.
