In politics, the antagonist of voters' antagonist is their hero. Newt Gingrich leads Republicans in national polls for the same reason Mitt Romney would rally Republicans in a general election: Barack Obama.
The Republican race is defined by seeming imponderables. How could a kingpin of D.C. insiders, a twice-divorced pol who led the charge against a presidential philanderer while himself philandering, take the lead in the party of Tea Party insurgents and social conservatives? And yet, how could the candidate who leaves conservatives so discouraged theyd actually back Gingrich ever unite conservatives in a general election?
Gingrich took the lead because he takes it to Obama and to a lesser degree that perennial conservative bête noir -- the media. Conservatives ache for a right-wing pugilist. For now, at least, Gingrich is the candidate of the Republican id.
That id has hit Romney hard. He can no longer claim the front-runner mantle. Yet if Romney pulls it out and wins the primary, Republicans will rally behind him.

But Obama will be next year. Thus, more than six in 10 Republicans are enthusiastic about voting for president (really against this president) compared to less than half of Democrats in key swing states, according to Gallup. Democrats know the identity of their candidate. Republicans do not. But Republicans know who they oppose.

Not this conservative Republican.
And not my family, all conservative Republicans.
If Romney is the Answer to the problem, the problem will never get solved.
I’ve voted in every presidential election since ‘88. If Romney is the GOP nominee, I will sit this one out.
Unfortunately this election will probably be an anybody but Obama election.
However I have spoken to a lot of democrats, and they are on the same train.
Anybody but Obama.
You are one hell of a dreamer there.
An arrogant one to boot.
You a Romney supporter?
I agree so we may as well nominate an excellent conservative and not a mushy moderate.
I will not rally or vote for the abortionist/socialist gun-grabbing Mitt Romney.
Well put my FRiend.
No it is not “Obama” or any single person.
It is “socialism”; a political ideology.
I, and many other conservatives will only vote for a conservative at this point. If the Republicans don’t run one then we vote third party or write in. Since compromise is not on the table in any form, there is no point in debating that.
It seems everywhere you look in the media Republican establishment and pundits that they are trying to foist Mitt Romney on us. I will have none of it.
ABO - Anyone But Obama
ABR - Anyone But Romney
Sad to say Obama will win if Romney’s our nominee. I know too many people who won’t even vote if it’s him. Believe me I have tried to change their minds by pointing out the alternative but they won’t budge. ;(
You peyton randolph are NOT "the first bull who speaks".
AN AESOP FABLE
A fable that every Conservative voter in 2012 should read and think about.
* * *
A cattle dealer once drove some bulls to the slaughterhouse. And the butcher came with his sharp knife.
"Let us close ranks and jack up this executioner on our horns," suggested one of the bulls.
"If you please, in what way is the butcher any worse than the dealer who drove us hither with his cudgel?" replied the bulls."
"But we shall be able to attend to the dealer as well afterwards!"
"Nothing doing," replied the bulls firm in their principles, to the counselor. "You are trying, from the left, to shield our enemies -- you are a social-butcher yourself."
And they refused to close ranks.
driving into New York City this morning to my 8YO daughters play...one block south of the Intrepid there’s a moving company named Manhattan moving or something...noticed a huge billboard on the side of the building facing traffic moving down the west side...it read:
MITT ROMNEY?? THAT GUY COULDN’T EVEN BEAT OBAMA!
RE: Anybody but Obama.
Before we make that conclusion, simply look at the responses to this thread...
It’s really ANYBODY BUT OBAMA OR ROMNEY (ABOOR) for many FReepers.
All we need is enough people who think this way and Obama will be the next President again.
RE: I will not rally or vote for the abortionist/socialist gun-grabbing Mitt Romney.
I thought Romney said he has seen the light on abortion...
RE: You a Romney supporter?
NO.
