I've actually met someone that shot their own finger off with a snub nose .38.
He was a dealer at a gun show and wouldn't sell a 2” for that very reason.
He knew how to handle a gun. When a guy pulled a gun on him in his shop and tried to rob him, he pulled his gun and shot. His finger was over the end of the barrel.
He didn't even know he'd shot his own finger off until it was all over.
OK. That guy has no business handling a firearm. I just tried to hold my Airweight Bodyguard in a way that puts one hand on the trigger and one finger of the other hand over the muzzle. I have average sized male hands and the only way I could even get a tip of a finger over the barrel was to hold the gun in such a non-functional two hand grip that you would never “accidently” do it. There is nothing unsafe about a 2” barrel unless it is in the hands of an idiot—and then any handgun is going to be unsafe.
Now, if he was holding some little pocket .25 or .22, that would be a different story.
