Michele Bachmann now in attack mode on Newt Gingrich. I have to admire her for her consistency. Newt is vulnerable for taking money from Freddie Mac. Large applause for Bachmann.
Newt responds by saying that what Bachmann says is untrue. Michele has a shocked look on her face...this should be good...
Bachmann responds...maintains Newt was a lobbyist for Freddie Mac and collected $1.6m. She wants to SHUT DOWN these government enterprises.
Newt responds again by stating he did nothing wrong by taking the money...gets lukewarm applause.
The question isn’t whether Newt did anything wrong by taking money from Freddie Mac to develop a rational to sell the idea of the GSEs to the voters and to “build bridges to Republicans on Capitol Hill” at just the moment conservatives were trying to dismantle these fiscal sinkholes.
The question is whether Newt did anything extremely stupid here.
And the answer is yes.
