LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Officials say a rash of recent burglaries has left them searching for tuba thieves.

South Gate High School music teacher Ruben Gonzalez Jr. told the Los Angeles Times that thieves broke into his band room and took only tubas. Losses included an upright concert tuba and a silver sousaphone — or marching-band tuba — worth a combined $13,000.

As a former tuba/sousaphone player, I’m shocked and dismayed.

In a “Police Squad” episode, detective Frank Drebin while looking for clues plays “Holiday for Tubas” on his eight-track car player.

(Imagine the worst ever rendition of “Holiday for Strings”)

They’re relating the tuba thefts to Mexicans. I always thought it was Cuban bands which relished the big brass boom.

I lived in a Mexican neighborhood, and their music had a lot of tuba bottom.

I think you are right. It's shocking how valuable copper and brass has become. I was in a Williams Sonoma store recently and saw a copper stock pot that, were it not made of copper, you could buy anywhere for $50. It was priced at $900.00. That's why people are stealing copper.

Yes, thieves motivated by the "Tuba Revolution." They've found the "good life," where tubas are just lying around waiting to be stolen. Tuba Revolution

“You come to get out of the hole.
You think you’re going to grab money in piles. You get here and you realize it’s not as easy as you imagined.”

That’s the exact same thing I thought when I played my first ‘gig’ in a bar...

Boy! Was I disappointed!

lol!
