I seem to remember the period from 1995 - 1998 working out pretty well for conservatism despite Slick Willie being President...Newt deserves credit for that.
I agree, we are going to have to elect enough conservatives to Congress that will be able to thwart Gingrich at every progressive move. However, our weak, effete, Republican elite have shown little desire to thwart Obama's progressive moves so I'm afraid they would allow Gingrich to engage all of his progressive, big government, "big ideas". Gingrich could truly be more destructive to our Country than Obama, if he is allowed to get his way.
