Newt: FDR Was The Greatest President Of The 20th Century
http://www.breitbart.tv/newt-fdr-was-the-greatest-president-of-the-20th-century/
The FDR haters understand what he did to our country.
Read “The Revolution Was” By Garret Garret
I’ll make it easy. It’s on my profile page. Starts about 1/3 of the way down.
Since Cain is gone, and Perry is lagging, that leaves Romney and Newt. Newt is better than Romney, who is CONSISTENTLY bad.
In Newt’s case, Cain’s endorsement goes a little way for me, too.
“FDR created the US welfare state. “
You could argue that FDR “started” the welfare state, but there are thousands of politicians elected since 1945 (and the voters that voted them in) that deserve the lions share of creating the current welfare state.
The “welfare state” of the USA as it was in 1946 was rather innocuous - I myself would say.
We have had plenty of time since 1945 to repeal Social security, food stamps, medicare, Fannie Mae, student loans, the GCA of 1968, etc.
Blaming FDR for what Carter, Truman, Johnson, Pelosi, Teddy Kennedy, Gore, Clinton, and others did since 1945 is blaming the wrong person for what is destroying the country.
I would agree that the welfare state has injured the nation, but FDR was a piker compared to LBJ when it comes to the welfare state.
FDR is great for his handling of a world war. FDR is great for his involvement with intelligence communities. FDR is great for forging a coalition that swept democrats to power for two generations.
We can pretend these things aren’t true, but they are.
The most significant inspiration for the inclusion of the right to an adequate standard of living in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was the 1941 Four Freedoms speech by US President Franklin Roosevelt, which declared freedom of speech, freedom of faith, freedom from want and freedom from fear. On the basis of the speech the American Law Institute established a draft proposals for an international bill of rights, the Statement of Essential Human Rights, which greatly influenced the UDHR. The statement included the right to adequate food and housing and the right to social security, including the right to health. Article 25 of the UDHR recognises the right to an adequate standard of living, stating that:
“(1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control. (2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All Children, whether born in or out of wedlock shall enjoy the same social protection.”[
I agree, we are going to have to elect enough conservatives to Congress that will be able to thwart Gingrich at every progressive move. However, our weak, effete, Republican elite have shown little desire to thwart Obama's progressive moves so I'm afraid they would allow Gingrich to engage all of his progressive, big government, "big ideas". Gingrich could truly be more destructive to our Country than Obama, if he is allowed to get his way.
Who WILL get your vote, if he wins the primary?
Newt: The Era of Reagan is over.
FUNG!
I would go further than "injured the nation." The welfare state is in the process of destroying this nation, just as it doing in Europe. LBJ was a disciple of FDR. He just built on and expanded the welfare state started by FDR. The fact that SCOTUS upheld the SS mandate paved the way for Medicare, Medicaid, and other welfare programs. Obamacare will be the final test to see if the Constitution will be upheld or that SCOTUS will rule that Big Government can control every facet of our lives. If SCOTUS rules in favor of the Obamacare mandate, the Constitution becomes a meaningless scrap of paper that can be defined by the politicians any way they want.
FDR's Freedom from Want provided the philosophical underpinning for LBJ's Great Society, which were really stalled initiatives from John F. Kennedy's New Frontier. LBJ's landslide win in 1964 with huge Dem majorities in Congress pushed thru these programs, which where further expanded by Nixon, Ford, and Carter. Bush 43 aided by Newt provided an even further expansion of Medicare with the Prescription Drug Program (Part D).
FDR is great for his handling of a world war. FDR is great for his involvement with intelligence communities. FDR is great for forging a coalition that swept democrats to power for two generations.
FDR was at the helm for WWII. We were woefully unprepared at the beginning of the conflict. I think we assign far too much credit to FDR when you consider the contributions of so many others who were part of this national mobilization of the country. FDR was ill and not that hands on when it came to directing the war effort. Be that as it may, FDR has received the credit to the benefit of the Dems.
What I deem FDR's most far reaching impact was his creation of the welfare state and a culture of dependency. He vastly expanded the scope and role of government that has threatened our liberties and individual rights. FDR's influence extended to both sides of the aisle so that both parties have embraced the welfare state and the entitlement programs. Very few politicians question the underlying assumptions for SS and Medicare/Medicaid. They are sacred cows.
We can pretend these things arent true, but they are.
No one is denying FDR's impact on this nation. He was very consequential. So were Mao, Stalin, and Hitler. The question is whether his influence was on balance good or bad. Unlike Newt who admires FDR and calls him his favorite President because he got things done, I have a very different view of FDR. I believe he had a long term negative impact on this country that will result in its destruction. The welfare state runs counter to the vision of our Founders and the founding principles of our Republic. I don't consider FDR to be "great."
Anything taken out of context will look very different than if you could see the actual intent of the statement. Not saying Newt is any Ronald Reagan, but Reagan could equally be taken out of context in a series of video compilations and be made to appear questionable.
Out of context snippets are not an honest tactic.
Wondering if Andrew was giving us a bit of rope-a-dope yeaterday when he slammed Beck.
FDR did more to destroy this country than any other President!
Newt did say that FDR was his “favorite” President and that he was taking a “lot of heat from the Right” on his views on FDR. Newt is always positioning himself in the middle when he sees it is to his advantage depending on the audience. When he criticized the Ryan plan on Medicare, he equated “right wing social engineering” with “left wing social engineering” as though there was a moral equivalency or that there was such as thing as “right wing social engineering.”
“Newt did say that FDR was his favorite President”
I thought he just said in the debate that George Washington was his favorite.
A) A political system versus an economic system. For example, USSR under Stalin had a totalitarian political system with communism guiding its economics. China today is a hybrid, with constrained "free enterprise" being largely controlled by the Chinese military.
The US today is a basket case waiting for a non-existent "magic bullet" - politically and economically. The point possibly missed is that you never get the "time" back, while the interest on the debt compounds, compounds, ... , etc.
B) As to WWII, see General Wedermeyer's book from 1958, The Wedermeyer Reports, for other perspectives on "Grand Strategy", who lost China, ..., etc.
C) released only a month ago, highly recommend George H. Nash's Freedom Betrayed: Herbert Hoover's Secret History of the Second World War and Its Aftermath.
To quote Arthur Jensen in the movie, "Network"
"What do you think the Russians talk about in their Councils of State? Karl Marx? They pull out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories, and minimax solutions and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments just like we do."
Favorite President of the 20th century according to his response to Brian Lamb in the video clips. He does say in one of them that FDR may be “greatest practioner of self government, certainly in the 20th century, and maybe in American history.”
The Welfare state was a creation of Lyndon Baines Johnson. FDR created a WORKfare state. Both of them are socialistic, but LBJ's socialism created a welfare class with no work ethic. FDR required all able bodied men to work or starve.
The Unions have opposed any type of work fare as it creates a low wage alternative to their high paid union jobs, especially on infrastructure projects.
FDR was probably the best wartime president we have had. He was able to mobilize the entire country in the war effort. If Bush had done the same thing after 9/11 there would be no terrorists threatening us today. But Bush told every American to just go about their business and pretend that we aren't at war. As a result we are still spinning our wheels in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I would hope that Gingrich has learned from history that if you are going to get involved in a war, that you had better not only enlist the support of the American people, but also enlist their HELP.
Agree ... except Rush never ran for office.
It has been over since 1988.
Reagan put us back on the right track. GHWB, Clinton, Bush II and Obama have all pulled the train off the tracks. We can be nostalgic about the Reagan Era, but it is over. We need a new era and Reagan isn't going to lead it. He set the example for the next Conservative Era.
Now, the question is...is it necessary that that War had to be fought?
In other words, had FDR unleashed the power of free markets in the US rather than stifling it, would the US and Europe have gone through the depressions which brought about Hitler?
And what about the far-left leaning officials at high levels in FDR's Govt...for example Harry Dexter White (Deputy Sec. of Treasury who created the World Bank, IMF and who was outed as a KGB Agent and his KGB friends, as well as people like Alger Hiss)? Didn't they do all kinds of mayhem which set us on the wrong track?
