No. This was smart.

The Donald is holding this “debate” for self- aggrandizement. He can’t get enough of it.

No, Perry has nothing to lose. Unless he pulls off a great performance, he isn’t going to win. He gains nothing by no showing. Mitt at least has New Hampshire.

It's difficult to say this was smart, other than Perry gets to avoid another debate.

Which would not be particularly bad for him.........

I agree with you. I don’t think Trump is credible AT ALL and Perry is right.

But that would only be a smart move on Perry's part if he can't successfully debate an aging financier gas bag with a potty mouth and bimbo eruptions. Surely Perry could...

Never mind, good move for Perry to slink away from the challenge.

Huge mistake by Perry.

And you know it.

The debate is sponsored by Newsmax, which last time I checked was a very conservative and well published periodical. Trump is only the moderator. His presence assures an audience. I think having Palin as one of the questioners would have been smart too, perhaps they offered and she refused, but I think this works for Newt. Americans hate a loser. They will root for the underdog. Newt shows that he is tenacious and will not quit. Americans like that. Americans also hate it when party members ridicule each other. Many of us here have lost respect for Bachman and Ann Coulter. In fact, I now read Ann’s column askance from before. It’s clear to me that she has her own agenda. I welcome any debate that discusses the issues. Romney refuesed a Lincoln-Douglas style debate with Newt? Is this also true?

I agree. Trump's continual self-glorification is sickening. The GOPers would serve their interests -- and those of the country -- by saying no to Trump.

Zactly! The Donald may talk like he’s a super conservative, but in his heart is first and foremost a promoter.... of the Donald.

My take on this “Trump” debate is that Newt needs to be careful, Trump may sound like he’s Newt’s hottest PR man and when it gets down to the nutcuttin, he is either pro-Mitt or jumps over to 3rd Party or even works out some sweet deal with nobama (i.e. the Birther thingy that resulted in nobama pushing out fakeroo BC and Trump mysteriously moving on without a word more).

Whatever the motivation of Trump, it’s Perry who needs to gain traction in the week before the IA Caucuses. He should seize every opportunity made available to him.
