Tea Party members get behind Gingrich
boston.com ^ | December 8, 2011 | Tracy Jan

He has surged to the top of the polls, having been crowned the latest Tea Party favorite by the movement’s rank and file. Newt Gingrich’sappeal is not universal among Tea Party conservatives, but for now he is their anointed warrior, boosted by his string of fiery debate performances filled with irreverent quips.

As Gingrich courts the group that will be so crucial to his success in Iowa and beyond, Gallup’s latest poll of registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents has him winning 47 percent of voters nationally who say they support the Tea Party movement. (More than half of Republicans consider themselves Tea Party supporters.) A month ago, Gingrich garnered 18 percent of Tea Party support, behind Herman Cain and Mitt Romney.

“Obviously, he’s really kind of taken over among that group,’’ said Jeff Jones, the Gallup Poll’s managing editor. “They’ve been casting about, looking for someone who is a better fit for them than Romney is. It looks like everyone’s had their chance and basically squandered it, so that leaves Gingrich.’’

Not this Tea Party Member nor any of the others I know of personally. We can do better

Ditto.

Sarah Palin matters to fewer and fewer. She needs to just take care of her young’ns.

Newt doesn’t need affairs to sully him. His marriages are sordid enough!

NO Newt!

So what’s his plan for Gingrichcare? Will we have to elect him first in order to find out what’s in it?

I’m thinking this will be like what happened to Cain. A steady drip of stories like that.

With some people running their jaw a little long against Gingrich, it is helpful to post some facts:

In 1996, after constructing two welfare reform bills that were vetoed by President Clinton, Gingrich and his supporters pushed for passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, which was intended to reconstruct the welfare system. The act gave state governments more autonomy over welfare delivery, while also reducing the federal government's responsibilities. It instituted the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program, which placed time limits on welfare assistance and replaced the longstanding Aid to Families with Dependent Children program. Other changes to the welfare system included stricter conditions for food stamp eligibility, reductions in immigrant welfare assistance, and recipient work requirements.

She showed her hand when she made her choice. She sure does talk a good game, but in the end.....

Too bad to....I was one of her supporters she left at the alter. She could have made history....and the needed wrecking ball for the DC elite. Guess she lacked “the right stuff” after all.

“the affairs have already been discounted in his support.”

We’ll see but I doubt it. The likely voters of today weren’t paying attention to politics 20 years ago when Newt was making headlines.

Needs repeating for anyone waiting for Palin’s endorsement to make up their own minds:

She endorsed McCain instead of the conservative in the AZ senate election!

OH cripes. Tea Party people, it won’t be long and he’ll shoot himself in the foot. He is a good talker, he could talk a horse out of it’s tail. He’s a prof, a writer, a man who loves the limelight, a man with good ideas, but as a president??? I think he’s a weak sister. The reason he did well as Speaker, was because Americans were sick and tired of the clinton/democrat antics. And yes, he did help with the taxes, but Social Security recipients are still paying taxes on their social security “income”.

So, who will she endorse? ...I'm guessing Rick Perry after the 1st of the year.

I'd appreciate the endorsemnet. Hope she doesn't take a flyer and endorse Newt. That would be tragic.

It’s assumed that the GOP nod will be a battle between the Establishment, represented by Mitt Romney and the TEA Party, represented by: Bachmann then Perry and then Cain.

Newt is a big government guy as long as he and his people are in charge of it. He is not a TEA Party guy. Right now he is representing the “not Mitt Romney” vote.

The TEA Party candidates have risen and fallen. One may still rise again but right now, the GOP does not have a TEA Party candidate.

stricter conditions for food stamp eligibility, reductions in immigrant welfare assistance, and recipient work requirements.

How did that all work out? As a percentage of the population, are there fewer people on foodstamps and welfare today then there were then?

Since that is a concern of yours, then you should support Gingrich for President - to win the next battle in the continuing war.
