Republican strategists on Monday bemoaned the prospect of a presidential debate hosted by Donald Trump even as Newt Gingrich, surging in recent polls, made a pilgrimage to see Mr. Trump, a billionaire real estate mogul and reality TV star.
Mr. Gingrich arrived Monday at Trump Tower in New York to a crush of media, the latest Republican presidential candidate to court Mr. Trump. Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, and other candidates have also made the trip.
Donald Trump is a great showman, Mr. Gingrich told reporters after his closed-door meeting. Hes also a great businessman.
Mr. Gingrich has accepted an invitation by Mr. Trump to participate in a debate days before the Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3. But leading Republican strategists and campaign officials on Monday condemned a Trump-moderated debate as a spectacle that would do more harm to the party than good.

I think the GOP is afraid that they won’t be able to control the questions.
Trump is a heck of a lot more conservative than ANY—including Fox News—and I mean ANY of the debate moderators so far.
Plus, unlike ALL—including Fox News—and I mean ALL the previous moderators, Donald Trump does not despise conservatives.
Good for Trump! Maybe we will hear some good questions. The MSM thinks they are the only ones who can do a debate, however prejudiced they are against republican candidates. I’d like to see all of them in a Townhall at the same time.
Trump is a big blowhard who loves the camera almost as much as he loves himself. Any debate he hosted would be all about Trump. Why would any candidate want to cheapen himself by attending a debate hosted by this egomaniac?
Do you think Trump is a conservative?
The grovelling RINOs love the MSM and hate Trump almost as much as they hated Herman Cain. What do you know? What is it about outsider businessmen these RINO liberals hate so much?
This is not the GOP. It is Rove and a few Bushites whining away, plus the mewling voice of a Paul fanatic for good measure. All that was lacking was a quote from Joe Scarborough.
No I don’t think he a conservative but he’ll ask real questions.
No, I don't.
If a liberal government offered Trump a way to make billions a la Soros or General Electric, he'd be singing its praises to the skies.
