“In hock” typically means a delinquent debt, or at least a long-standing debt. So there’s no evidence that Gingrich was “in hoc” to Tiffany’s.

Ok, I’ve always understood it as owing. But from all the jokes about it it also seemed he ‘owed’ for some time. I’ll look it all up tomorrow.

As a pawn broker’s wife: it means owing a debt. It can mean that your goods are put up for collateral.
