The attackers of Mr. Cain are very careful to use a little bit of truth in every accusation. The nature of the truthful part may be completely irrelevant, but once Mr. Cain has to confirm that ("Yes, I was staying in Holiday Inn on that day") then the attacker can pile tons of lies on top of that.
About the telephone bill problem. Bills change often, usually because marketing wants a new layout for some stupid reason. Nobody can remember how a phone bill looked like a year ago, let alone a decade ago. Phone companies print bills on regular paper using more or less common laser printers. Anyone can print a "bill" if she is willing to spend a few hours duplicating it in Adobe Illustrator. The bait will be the same - a few true texts to or from Mr. Cain. Then the number of texts is increased from 6 to 60 or something. No reasonable person can remember how many texts were sent to a specific person a year ago. A businessman may send hundreds of them per day to all kinds of people (it's not his choice who to talk to.) It takes an agenda to dig up or to print a phone bill and then go and try to hurt someone who, as the claim goes, "loved her."
Regardless, a sentient voter shouldn't even pay attention to these matters. Hardly any of these accusations affect the ability of a person to command the country. Chastity shouldn't be a requirement for the position; a reasonably faithful family life will suffice. However the media found a lucrative racket for themselves. Please them, in one way or another, and you become "a teflon candidate." Displease them and you will be made unelectable. A dead girl in the candidate's bed is no longer required - ten live ones in front of cameras do the job just as well.
