LET'S GET REAL: A Newt Gingrich Nomination Would Be A Disaster For The Republican Party
Business Insider ^ | 112811 | Michael Brendan Dougherty

Newt Gingrich is now suddenly the candidate to beat Mitt Romney. And conservatives are said to be "salivating" at the chance of watching him debate President Obama.

But the truth is that a Newt Gingrich nomination would be a disaster for the Republican party: He cannot win.

And it would be a major setback to conservative causes, because Newt Gingrich tarnishes the right's ideals with his obvious corruption.

Let's take those two one at a time.

He cannot win:

The New Hampshire Union Leader credits Newt Gingrich with engineering the 1994 Republican Revolution when Republicans took their first majority in Congress in 50 years and Newt ascended to the role of Speaker.

But Gingrich deserves more credit for ship-wrecking that Revolution. Within just two years, Newt Gingrich shut-down the government and his approval rating dropped to just 25 percent. It never recovered.

By 1997, Gingrich was facing dozens of ethics charges. Although many of them were dismissed, he was fined an unprecedented $300,000 by the House Ethics Committee (still run by Republicans at the time), and admitted to giving "inaccurate, incomplete and unreliable statements were given to the committee." Newt did this precisely during a time he was trying to impeach the president for perjury.

OK, people show of hands, raise your hand if you sat out 2008 because you thought McCain was too liberal.

Comes down to this, don't it?

Which would be the greater "disaster" for the rinos??

The election of Ging-rich.....

Or the re-election of the stain???

I, for one and only one, will vote AGAINST the stain next November.

You forgot...

Herman Cain is a lightweight thinker who is extremely slow on his feet and has three answers to every question

1. 999
2. I’ll hire the right people who will tell me what I should do, and
3. That should be done by the states.

Brought to you by a former Cain supporter...

Romney is an electable RINO.

Gingrich is an unelectable RINO.

Both are terrible and I won’t support either.

His “obvious corruption?” Do they really want to talk about “obvious corruption?”

hate to say it but Newt IS vulnerable here...on many levels. Although he's a choirboy compared to obama, we'll never hear about obama's sins while Newt's will be trumpeted from every network anchor chair and big city newpaper headline from the nomination to election day. That's not fair of course but it is the truth...and under a microscope Newt IS a whole lot less attractive on the environment, climate change, health care, taxes, his private life, etc. etc. etc.

Women won’t vote for Gingrich. Maybe 35% of them at most.

A landslide for Zero if this is what we do.

The latest poll says that Newt Gingrich is killing Romney in New Hampshire. If Mitt loses Iowa, loses, New Hampshire, loses South Carolina, then he is finished.

You’d think the Cainiacs would have enough love for America to blast Newt AFTER Newt rids us of Romney.

To many, he’s percieved as not very likable....

And so was every Pub POTUS in my lifetime. According to the biggest enemy of the U.S.A.....the U.S. Press.

If Clinton was eligible for a third term his impeachment would mean nothing.

The American people had 4 years, 1994-1998, to compare Newt to Clinton. Who do people admire more today? Who was forced to resign in disgrace? Who was blamed for the government shutdown in 1995? Who got ALL the credit for balancing the budget, creating a surplus and reforming welfare??? There are few people on this planet whom I despise more than Bill Clinton but I gotta admit...Clinton ate Newt for breakfast. I don't think a Newt candidacy will work.

You make a good point but there is something to be said for momentum. Let Newt win IA, NH and SC and he might be unstoppable.

I expect, Cainiacs, if I could have recorded you at the time in the late 1990's that you all would have been calling these charges against Gingrich a witchhunt, baseless, and vindictive.

And they would have been right. The charges were garbage and Pubs caving in to media pressure to throw Newt overboard led to their stagnation and loss of the House majority. The Pubs never accomplished anything big after he was gone.

However, Newt is not the best candidate for conservatives. He has a tendency to over reach and to always look for the large and dramatic solution. Sometimes a horse will get the job done instead of a zebra. If Newt is POTUS conservatives will always have to worry about when he is going to have a "Nixon going to China" moment.

I think Newt is solid on supporting Life and other social issues. I think Newt would be good on appointing conservative justices. I'm not so sure he would be good about devolving power back to the states. His history is one of thinking he can manage the existing beast better rather than killing it.

Perry is going to bounce back. Perry is a better conservative candidate. He has a solid conservative history and has been as strong fighting for the unborn as any candidate we will ever get. Also, Perry is not from the beltway culture or the Ivy League elites. He comes to DC as an outsider. He will bring outsiders in to run the bureaucracy. Finally and most importantly Perry makes no bones about being a Christian.

AG phrased it well when she said something to the effect of, "I want a POTUS who will get down on his knees and seek the Lord's guidance".

I'm sticking with Perry. I hope you Newt supporters reconsider.

"Maybe a disaster is what the Republican Party needs."

By the number of supporters right here on FR for faux conservatives, beltway cronies, kumbia singing with the 'RATS' insider trading millionaires, I think that a complete a$$ womping of Republican Party may just be what's called for.

Obvious corruption? It takes Newt to make them recognize corruption? What in God’s name has been right under their hairy noses for the last three years? i see corruption and it is blue and green with various shades of black and white.

I think Perry would be our best bet. He’s more conservative than Newt and doesn’t have any real baggage they can use to sabotage him.

I agree.
