LET'S GET REAL: A Newt Gingrich Nomination Would Be A Disaster For The Republican Party
Business Insider ^ | 112811 | Michael Brendan Dougherty

Newt Gingrich is now suddenly the candidate to beat Mitt Romney. And conservatives are said to be "salivating" at the chance of watching him debate President Obama.

But the truth is that a Newt Gingrich nomination would be a disaster for the Republican party: He cannot win.

And it would be a major setback to conservative causes, because Newt Gingrich tarnishes the right's ideals with his obvious corruption.

Let's take those two one at a time.

He cannot win:

The New Hampshire Union Leader credits Newt Gingrich with engineering the 1994 Republican Revolution when Republicans took their first majority in Congress in 50 years and Newt ascended to the role of Speaker.

But Gingrich deserves more credit for ship-wrecking that Revolution. Within just two years, Newt Gingrich shut-down the government and his approval rating dropped to just 25 percent. It never recovered.

By 1997, Gingrich was facing dozens of ethics charges. Although many of them were dismissed, he was fined an unprecedented $300,000 by the House Ethics Committee (still run by Republicans at the time), and admitted to giving "inaccurate, incomplete and unreliable statements were given to the committee." Newt did this precisely during a time he was trying to impeach the president for perjury.

Sing that song as loud as you can...nobody’s listening! Cain went down the drain. He’s looking to hire the folks who are experts who can pull him out. It’s not about sinking down the drain that’s important. It’s the decision making process to decide to get out of the drain and hire the best experts to that, that’s important. And that’s what he’s going to do. He’s going to surround himself with experts to get him out of the drain.

I agree that it shouldn’t matter but DOES. (Similar: Newt is very overweight. SHouldn’t matter, probably does.)

And even if Gingrich did take the other three, Gingrich is far, far better than Romney.

Depends on what your goal is. If your goal is to replace obama I doubt that. Gingrich is the better Conservative Republican, no doubt about that. But Romney would be better against obama. As much as I hated typing those words I think they're true.

I was an alert conservative at the time Gingrich attempted the showdown with Clinton.

That showdown might have come down on Clinton’s side, but it was not Clinton who engineered it. It was the media that ran non-stop stories about closed passport offices and people who couldn’t get assistance.

The media won that engagement for Clinton, and the media protected Clinton throughout the Lewinsky affair.

It is inappropriate to say that Clinton schooled Gingrich. I’d be more inclined to say that Peter Jennings did.

Newt can use that magazine as a campaign aid.

He got the same treatment as Sarah Palin.

I should have... but I saw Palin and I was filled with hope... then mcnasty had her taken out and muted her at every opportunity... I donated $2500.00 to their campaign... and I still got obama... and I will NEVER vote for another progressive big government republican again... and I never have voted for a freakin’ dim... and never will.

I respectfully disagree. He knows exactly what’s going to be thrown at him. He’s smart as a whip. He is prepared.

People are freaking fed up with the media and their attacks. The fact that Cain is still in this at all illustrates this.

Just watch.

The problem is that Newt will bring us 4 more of Obama

So... You contend that Newt is a Commie? Did I misunderstand you?

I would really hope for Cain an outsider a regular citizen,...

I understand that. It's part of the reason I like Perry.

...the MSN is going to wait until it is to late for us to make a change and then Newt is going to be slaughtered, really, really ugly and no way for us to turn back!!!!!!

Every candidate is going to face the onslaught from the media. However, the candidate, his staff, Pubs across the country, and all of us will be saying "are you better off today than you were 4 years ago? obama has got to go!".

So was I. Clinton got the best of Newt and the media were his willing allies. When has it ever been otherwise in modern American politics?

You think Romney would be a better president than Gingrich or a better opponent to Obama?

I think it’s no contest on the presidency. When in power, Gingrich has governed as a conservative. Romney has governed as a liberal. There is absolutely no reason to believe it would be different now.

As a candidate, I think McCain proved that unobtrusive and soft-spoken doesn’t work, and that’s Romney.

So, I disagree. Gingrich would draw a sharp contrast, he’s a far better debater, and Obama would hide. That hiding wouldn’t work since time is on the side of the conservative media.

The lamestream has the advantage in getting things out quickly and blanketing the airwaves.

The conservatives have enough programming to eventually fight back. Fox, talk radio, and the blogosphere would go nuts over a president avoiding debates.

Newt was showing the world what conservative leadership looked like in a post-Reagan world while a lot of these pups were still in diapers!

We have got to stop eating our own. Lets get the strongest conservative candidate and go kick that socialist from Kenya out of office!

I'm no Romney supporter! I think he'd make the better candidate...Newt would make the better president. And if Newt runs I will support him to the bitter end.

I hope you're right! And as I said in an earlier reply, If Newt wins the nomination I will be a very strong supporter and will work for his election and give my financial support. I will do the same if any of our candidates with teh exception of Romney or Paul get the nod. I'll vote for Romney if I must. I pray to God that I never have to make that decision about Paul.

You nailed it Kenny. Perry also is the only candidate with a recent record to contrast Obama.

Perry's success in Texas while Obama was President is going to be the best ammo against Obama's billion dollar war chest.

This is a 100% stats election and no one but Perry has stats. We can't reach back 15 years for Newt and good Lord we can't compare Romney's time as governor to Obama.

It's as if Republicans are so afraid of losing to the TOTUS that they are willing to abandon everything from life issues to gun control.

Rick Perry is responsible in part for creating 40% of all jobs created in the USA during the Obama depression.

We are shutting down our 13th Planned Parenthood in Texas since Perry defunded it.

Perry is a lifetime member of the NRA and actually owns and shoots regularly.

Rick Perry is the contrast to Obama with the record that has already beat Obama head to head. Rick Perry can actually say "I created more jobs as the Governor of Texas than you did while President. Voters let me do for our country what we were able to do in Texas." Perry also has the conviction behind his words.

Not me. No one can blame Obama on me and I pledge to vote for whichever Republican my party chooses. I will not be a party to help Obama have four more disastrous years.

Newt doesnt sound quite that brilliant when the rubber meets the road and he is under stress

But also Cain (as much as I like him) has made some noticeable fumbles on camera too. As a rule, Dems don't get media attention when it happens, GOP candidates do, with Romney mostly getting a pass for the time being (although Obama now is running a few anti-Romney ads just in case, and the media is likely to follow his lead). We are in danger of a repeat of 2008, with no conservatives left standing in the Presidential election.
