Newt Gingrich Stands by 'Soft' Immigration Stance, Despite Party Backlash

WASHINGTON — Newt Gingrich isn’t backing off his “humane” immigration stance despite complaints from Republican hardliners and fellow Presidential hopefuls — he’s embellishing it.

The former House speaker issued “10 Steps to a Legal Nation” this week, expanding on his remarks during Tuesday’s GOP debate

(snip)

Those guilty only of sneaking into the U.S. would have a path “to legality, but not citizenship” similar to the existing naturalization process, plus a penalty fee of at least $5,000.

I don’t care about Newt, Bob.

I care that Cain doesn’t have a clue about the U.S. Constitution. He’s running for the flippin’ presidency and YOU know more about it than he does.

I’m voting for YOU, for Pete’s sake!

That’s fine, he’s got plenty of time to work on it.

He is running for the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!!!!

Right now he is not qualified to teach American History in Junior High School.

“I’m voting for YOU, for Pete’s sake!”

Thanks, you can join my wife. The way the Republicans are splitting apart, I may just get the nomination.

“Right now he is not qualified to teach American History in Junior High School. “

Still beats the candidates that intend to legalize millions of lawbreakers.

I actually wouldn’t mind someone giving Santorum a test drive. Maybe they’ll go there.

That would be great. So far he hasn't left the batting box. Cain was rounding third but he just got picked off trying a fancy slide. There really isn't anywhere for anyone to go who wants to deport everyone who is here illegally. Cain wants to let the States decide. That should finish him off. Perry and Gingrich will undoubtedly move up a notch. Romney will stay at 20%. If Santorum can get to first base, I'll be rooting for him. But I don't see that happening.

That would be all of them.

Just watch. All of these candidates are for some kind of legalization process. Gingrich is the only one honest enough to put forth a plan.

So what are you going to do with Cain, since he wants to make immigration and amnesty a State by State issue?

You sticking with him, or are you going to change your tag line?

I’m with Cain all the way. I saw him give a similar answer a while ago. I don’t see him pushing legislation to legalize millions of lawbreakers...so he still gets my vote.

However, if he becomes ‘humane’ or is no longer ‘heartless’ then I would reconsider. But so far, nothing for me to worry about.

I like Bob, but he’s a true believer.

He’ll not part with the Messiah of the Month until he’s proven a false prophet.

(Which he did for me on the abortion issue, and which he did for many tonight on the immigration issue, and which he did for many more on the foreign policy front, and which he did for a lot on the new revenue stream front.)

But...who cares...he’s the Messiah and I feel a tingle up my leg. :>)

That will take a long time, but nice try on the abortion issue...actually pretty pathetic.

I said that Cain lost me on the abortion issue. He did. That’s the way it happened.

But...heck...if you know better than me about why I make decisions, then go for it.

You could do a guy a favor, though, and explain why I think my wife of many years thinks she’s in charge.

:>)

... It's become abundantly clear that the Democrat Party is controlled by Marxists and that the GOP establishment, clinging to what power it has left, defending and enabling the Democrats at every turn, is the biggest obstacle to re-establishing genuine liberty and freedom in this country. Continuing to prop up the GOP establishment, directly or indirectly, with votes and money is no better than offering bailouts to zombie financial institutions or keeping alive dead religious institutions. At some point, enough is enough; put the dying horse out of its misery and start fresh. ...

Now that Fr is back, I second that.

Cain had just finished making serious remarks about families needing to make their own choices in these matters...pro-choice.

Cain tipped his pro-choice attitude when he refused to sign the Pro-Life pledge and then came up with a Rat like type explanation. More and more I'm convinced Cain is like Trump. A moderate playing at being conservative.

Going into the primaries I see 2 candidates that can beat Romney and obama, Perry & Gingrich. Gingrich has the edge right now and is the best at the debates. Perry has the much better conservative record and more executive experience. I know some of you like Gingrich. I like Perry.

Cain supporters are going to have to figure out which guy they like because Cain has been exposed as not really as conservative as originally advertised and clearly lacking a real understanding of the issues.

Well, what do you think about Cain’s recent interview dealing with illegals?

It didn’t reassure me much.

Congrats, Bob, your wife is voting for you.

Not sure Mr. Cain can say the same.

There are those whose dislike of Cain is so strong, it obscures all rational objectivity. Those of us from Cain’s home state of GA know him from a long way back. We know he is passionate about the USA and about conservativism. We don’t mind that he’s not always uber-slick like a career politician. We recognize a good solid conservative when we see and come, over many years, to know one. He’s not your choice. I get that. But to try to convince me or anyone who truly knows Cain that he is soft on abortion is a fools errand. The only people who will buy that are those who don’t know Cain to begin w. I’m not one of them.

I like Perry too.

His poll numbers haven’t shown it yet, but I feel and hope that as all the other front runners fail, people will go back and look at Perry.

Maybe they will actually look at the real Perry, his stands and his record and abandon all the negative propaganda that’s been spewed about him around here.

Cain showed his total lack of grasp of the issue when he said it should be left to the states.

He doesn’t seem to even understand the constitution.

You have no idea what Cain would do about illegals because he has no record on this or any issue.

All you have is hope.

Oh, I don’t think he is soft on abortion. It’s easy to make a blanket anti-abortion statement and I think he believes that.

However, when confronted with a hypothetical situation, he got confused and couldn’t express himself well enough. To this day, I don’t know what the heck he was trying to say.

I used to think Cain was a very good man but a very poor candidate.

Now, I’m not all that sure about the former.

I have read hundreds of your posts on FR. The mocking, demeaning way you speak of Cain may appeal to some, but it repels me in the extreme. I do not speak of candidates I don’t support the way you talk about Cain. Occasionally I offer informed critique of other candidates. But I do not mock or belittle them. I leave that to DUers.

There are those whose dislike of Cain is so strong, it obscures all rational objectivity.

His supporters here have created a lot of that.

My distrust of Cain began with his failure to sign the Pro-life pledge. It increased with his missteps on various issues such as "the right of return". It increased again with his throwing out the race card when attacking Perry. The final straw was the baseless accusations against Perry that he was behind the sex allegations and then his refusal to retract his statements when it became obvious Perry had nothing to do with it.

I'm with Perry. I see 10 yrs as Gov of TX and know he is a solid conservative. I know he's solidly Pro-Life and good on the other social issues. He has served in the military. He has a good record on judicial appointments and his state has shown incredible job creation while most have declined dramatically. I can be reasonable assured with what I will get with a Perry presidency.
