I have commented on this before. There is an intangible but very important role for the president that I just call "being the president." Reagan and Clinton both loved to "be the president," and they were both good in that role. Being the president means being positive about America, comforting her when bad things happen, being the cheerleader for us up or down. This role doesn't mean pushing any particular legislation, it is the baby kissing, championship team congratulating, turkey pardoning, space shuttle disaster mourning intangibles the Americans need to do collectively, so our president stands in for us.
Obama has absolutely no skills in being the president. He avoids this so much we wonder if he wants to be president at all. Maybe he doesn't, which actually, is fine. Not everyone is suited for it.
Prediction: The joint press conference with Bill Clinton where Clinton took over the whole interview will be historically seen as the beginning of the end of his presidency.
