Spanish right wins election by landslide: exit poll
AFP ^

Spain's right stormed to a landslide election victory Sunday, an exit poll said, as voters toppled yet another eurozone government engulfed in a deepening debt crisis.

Bowed by a 21.5 percent jobless rate, a stalled economy and spending cuts, the 36 million-strong electorate ended the Socialists' seven-year rule with a shattering defeat, the exit poll showed.

Opposition leader Mariano Rajoy's Popular Party took an absolute majority of between 181 and 185 seats in the 350-member Congress of Deputies, said projections based on an exit poll by public broadcaster RTVE.

The ruling Socialist party PSOE won between 115 and 119 seats, the poll said.

If the exit poll is correct, Rajoy will have a free hand to ram through severe austerity measures in the eurozone's fourth biggest economy.

Spain is the fifth and last of the so-called periphery eurozone nations to ditch its government this year after Ireland, Portugal, Greece and Italy.

Though considered uncharismatic, Rajoy won support from voters lured by his promise to fix the economy and create jobs, even if it means more austerity.

He vowed to make cuts "everywhere", except for pensions, so as to meet Spain's target of cutting the public deficit to 4.4 percent of gross domestic product in 2012 from 9.3 percent last year.

Let me see if I understand this situation: The people in the PIIGS (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain) nations are collectively smarter than the people in the Obomama regime? I hope the people in Romania and the United States toss out their governments at the earliest opportunity to show that PIIGS R US voters are smarter than the Ivy League lunatics and loons give us credit for being.

Let’s not wait for 21% unemployment to turn the corner to conservatism.

If Barry increases taxes, of course, we may well see 20% unemployment.

“after the socialist destroyed the country”

Never met a socialist in my life who wasn't a self-interested hypocrite. Marx was a lazy moron with an axe to grind and someone else’s money to support him, like so many of the idiots his ideology has spawned.

Why is it people put the Asshat Lefties in office in the first place.

Why do the Conservatives ALWAYS have to be the big bad adults.

All conserves do is clean up Commie/fascist/socialist/progressive pig styes.

Good luck by the time you get it cleaned up the braindead voters will start putting in the lefties again.

If they are really “right wing” they will call for the reinstatement of Statues and other monuments honoring Franco.

If the Spanish "right" has any common sense, they will stay far, far away from Franco, Mussolini and other unsavory gangsters.

All Franco did was save Spain, and 200,000 Jews from the Gas Chambers.

But the Left will never tell you that.

The Socialists won in Spain in 2004 in a fluke, as a result of the train bombing. The voters’ temper tantrum delivered them untold economic misery, not to mention raving leftist social policies.

“If the Spanish “right” has any common sense, they will stay far, far away from Franco, Mussolini and other unsavory gangsters.”

Until you could envision “Occupy Wall Street” (and much worse) happening in every town & city for months, you wouldn’t understand Franco or Mussolini; in any case, they (especially Franco) were hardly “gangsters”. Over 7,000 priests were killed in Spain’s Civil War (which Franco was one of the last generals to join); he put an end to that, and accomplished his goal: To live & die in a Catholic Spain.

Americans can point fingers at European fascism because we’ve been insulated from the Communist violence that spawned the rise of fascism.

“Let’s not wait for 21% unemployment to turn the corner to conservatism.”

We’re probably there already, and the voters have responded (starting in 2009). If the election were held today Obama would lose Illinois.

You’re right; he was a benevolent despot, who spared his people the horrors of WWII.

He had his “I told you so” moment when the US reached out to his government during the Cold War for bases in Spain; he already knew what Communists was, while our leftist press demonized him. He is still not given credit for what he saved Spain from, and his enemies are still not acturately described in history books.

I’ll “enlighten” you, go read up on Franco, from a non-leftist based source.
