If a mountain lion had gotten to within 10 feet of me when I was 15 years old, I might have soiled my pants. Kudos to this kid for keeping his head and doing what needed to be done.
From the Associated Press: LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission says a 15-year-old deer hunter shot and killed a mountain lion that was only 10 feet from him. The boy, of Wayne, shot the cougar Saturday near Creighton in northeast Nebraska. Officials say he was hunting a shelterbelt in Knox County and spotted the mountain lion 10 feet away before shooting it. Mountain lions are protected year-round in Nebraska, but may be killed if threatening people or attacking livestock. Officials say no charges will be filed, as evidence indicated the shooting was in self-defense. A commission expert says the mountain lion was a young male. The cougars carcass was turned over to Game and Parks officials, as required by law.
Good thing he wasn’t the big kitty’s dinner.
Does anybody remember when killing a threat including a predator animal was okay?
I used to live in the foothills in Colorado and we had a problen with a mountian lion and the Game and Fish Dept. told me even though I had small children I could not kill it! The mountian lion was more important than my children!
The lion lost!
Tree huggers and preditor lovers beware I have a compound bow you can’t hear!
AHHH, the “3-S” strategy!! Shoot, Shovel, Shut-up!
I don’t go up in the mountains - not unarmed. The deer go into the town limits here but I have never seen a cougar in Colorado yet even though I’m sure they’re plenty around here since their prey is abundant.
Mountain lions are known to roam over wide areas. One mountain lion tagged in the Colorado Rockies was found less than a year later in south central Nebraska.
What kind of game animal is a "shelterbelt"?
shelterbelt = windbreak
That comment is so awesome it should be your tag line.
It may just be me... but have mountain lions been in the news a lot lately or what?! It seems like I am reading about human-mountain lion incidents a lot more now than I have ever read. In fact, I recently read of one being spotted on I450 near the Conneticut Avenue exit in Maryland. That shocked me and many of my neighbors. I don’t have any idea about the laws concerning mountain lions in Maryland... if one is in my yard, it is SSS.
Yes, I've google'd it to discover that it is not a game animal but a position to hunt "from".
The writer dropped a word: "Officials say he was hunting FROM a shelterbelt...".
I have a co-worker who is from Omaha. He said years ago a cougar was spotted running down the main artery inside the city limits. Cougars have now been spotted not from where I live in western Wisconsin. There are regular bear colonies now in western Wisconsin, and it’s only a matter of time before a cougar gets itself killed... shot or run over. Still waiting on reports of a Wisconsin hogzilla. There’s loads of wild pigs running loose in the counties south of mine, but I haven’t seen any or heard reports of any wild pigs in my county, La Crosse.
