That is true, but Newty is no Saint.
My take on this is that while Perry got hammered for going on the Lettermans show and playing along with poking fun at the 53 seconds gaffe, Cain got grilled HARD by Letterman.
Cain did well but he got grilled HARD and some of it is going to stick.
