The Iranians did fairly badly against the Iraqis in the 80’s.

They had them outnumbered 2:1, up to 3:1 at times, and still exhausted themselves and lost.

And that was when the Iranians were mostly still enthusiastic about their revolution and the mullahs.

That was also when Khomeini was radically remaking society in accordance with his vision, including purges of senior officers and such. Same thing happened with Stalin’s purges. The result was a humiliatingly badly bungled campaign in Finland, which emboldened Hitler to invade Russia.
