I have never owned a gun. Matter of fact, I have fired a gun a grand total of one time in my life. I shouldered a shotgun out in the north Georgia woods when I was nineteen years old and fired at a milk bottle filled with water as a target. The kick from the gun nearly tore my shoulder off, since I obviously had no clue what I was doing. I have no idea if I came close to hitting that jug.
I have never wanted to own a gun. I fish. No need to shoot fish, though I am sure that takes place. I have never been hunting. I am not opposed to it in any way; it just works out that I have never been asked to join a hunting party by my father or brother-in-law -- and considering my lifetime gun résumé to this point, that is, for their sake, likely a very good thing.
What I have done is held a pistol in self-defense. Robbed at gunpoint when I was working at a gas station off Interstate 20 east of Atlanta in 1978, I grabbed the pistol the owner kept under the counter and (for some silly eighteen-year-old-full-of-vinegar-manhood-thingy) chased the dirtbag out the door. Of course, I had already hit the silent alarm, and the next person yelling at me to drop the gun was the second person who had pointed a gun at me in the span of six minutes -- only he was wearing a cool blue uniform and waving a standard-issue .357 magnum of the DeKalb County Police Department.
So my personal, limited experience with guns is not good. Actually it's just this side of tragic. But I have considered, and now again...

Are you trying to defend your self, or be a social worker?
Do some more thinking.
Sorry about that. Than i would definayely go with a 20 guage over a 12 gauge if the recoil is too big.
Also - - an AR is better for a woman than a AK in my opinion since the recoil is less.
As for handguns - if you get a Semi-Auto - make sure you can rack the slide w ease.
No, no, we didn’t do those things at the same time. No drinking beer when shooting or swimming. We’d bring a couple six-packs when we had girls along and ‘kiss under the stars’.
No problem.
Thanks for all the suggestions!
FR is the best place to get good information.
I read the responses to your reply. You were lucky to say the least. I wanted to teach our daughter to shoot before she went to college, but never did. During her second year, some guys took her dove hunting. She had never had so much fun in her life. I refinished a 20 gage last spring. I may give her that for her birthday or Christmas this year.
Well we can’t forget Americans’ used to indulge in tar and feathering...
I’m ready to bring back that little tradition.
Good luck then.
One can see it coming to past the way things are heading.
LOL! Maybe a life long Atlanta city slicker? The robbed store where he worked was in Atlanta's suburbs, IIRC. Maybe Atlanta had home rule BS regarding Second Amendment rights?
Atlanta along with Columbus (if anything more anti-gun than Atlanta), Macon and Savannah all had local anti-gun laws until the Ga legislature passed preemption about 15 years ago overturning all local ordinances. Local bedwetters keep trying to pass anti-gun laws, but so far have made no headway.
Same is true in Alaska, Griz and black bears.
“”but did shoot it several different times at the daughter house.””
I’m sure you didnt’t mean that the way it came out - LOL!
I’ve been shooting since I was 12 years old but I’ve stayed away from shotguns. Now that I’m much, much older, maybe I’ll reconsider it. My husband bought one for me - at least he calls it “your shotgun” but after shooting it in the CA desert one time, I wasn’t interested in continuing.
Correction - didntt = didn’t
Smaller pistols kick harder for the same size bullet. Get one that fits your hand like a glove, and enjoy!
“A good semi auto is much easier to handle than a revolver.”
No, I don’t buy that for a second, and I’ve been shooting for close to sixty years.
Your journey of personal discovery is a matter of supernatural indifference to me. I couldn't care less if you have a gun or not. The very fact that you're incapable of deciding tells me that you're not the sort of person who listens to advice or learns from the facts - namely the unescapable fact that unless you're a complete moron you're safer with a gun than without. Maybe you should just go watch "The View" or Oprah reruns.
“Dont know though if this is strong enough to take someone
down.”
Despite “the word” from all the many “Big Time Pistoleros” out there, placement counts much more in a knockdown than caliber, and the pistol you have with you is ALWAYS more effective than the hand cannon you left at home because it was too heavy or unwieldy to lug around.
The fact is, most firearms encounters - by a VERY large majority - end without a shot being fired, simply because the intimidation factor of a firearm - ANY firearm - is so great.
For a beginner, recoil is tough to handle, and developing marksmanship is best begun with a .22.
Thanks sickoflibs.
