I have never owned a gun. Matter of fact, I have fired a gun a grand total of one time in my life. I shouldered a shotgun out in the north Georgia woods when I was nineteen years old and fired at a milk bottle filled with water as a target. The kick from the gun nearly tore my shoulder off, since I obviously had no clue what I was doing. I have no idea if I came close to hitting that jug.
I have never wanted to own a gun. I fish. No need to shoot fish, though I am sure that takes place. I have never been hunting. I am not opposed to it in any way; it just works out that I have never been asked to join a hunting party by my father or brother-in-law -- and considering my lifetime gun résumé to this point, that is, for their sake, likely a very good thing.
What I have done is held a pistol in self-defense. Robbed at gunpoint when I was working at a gas station off Interstate 20 east of Atlanta in 1978, I grabbed the pistol the owner kept under the counter and (for some silly eighteen-year-old-full-of-vinegar-manhood-thingy) chased the dirtbag out the door. Of course, I had already hit the silent alarm, and the next person yelling at me to drop the gun was the second person who had pointed a gun at me in the span of six minutes -- only he was wearing a cool blue uniform and waving a standard-issue .357 magnum of the DeKalb County Police Department.
So my personal, limited experience with guns is not good. Actually it's just this side of tragic. But I have considered, and now again...

Guns are for killing.
I don’t want to kill anyone.
But I will.
Take classes, go to a gun store, and get what you are comfortable with. The classes should have guns to practice with.
Do this IF you are prepared to pull the gun out when you are ready to kill someone out of necessity. Guns are not for just scaring bad people away.
At the range, I typically train at 3, 5, and 7 yard intervals and quickly make mince of the target. Wide choice of ammo. My favorties are #4 .410 shotshells for snakes and varmints in the field. For self-defense I prefer Federal's .410 000 Buck (4 ball load) as well as Remington's .410 PDX load pictured below. It's really nasty and NO JOKE !!
...and give away your position. Besides some of these thugs are so stupid, they wouldn't know what the sound was anyway.
Winchester makes the PDX < /nit picky freeper gun guy> ;)

I did the same, only I was playing naked beach volley-ball.
All them bullets look alike. ;)
The finest site on the web (IMHO) concerning firearms and ballistics.

Thanks for the ping!
For your information a .177 pellet gun will kill someone if the shot is placed right. Only problem is that 1. the shot has to be placed in the heart (bypassing bones) or through the eye and socket into the brain. Furthermore, it does not have any knockdown power.
Larger calibers have increasing knockdown power in direct relation to the bullet size. Knockdown power is what INSTANTLY stops the target from coming at you before it is wasted.
A small 380 is good for close range and will do the job. The larger calibers are larger and heavier guns but do the job with guaranteed success.
Go to a gun range and try it out: as you become more proficent, you will feel more comfortable with the weapon.
Based on all accounts I’ve seen from the experts in the area, you are much less likely to have legal problems if you happen to kill a perp to stop the threat he is presenting than if you just happen to wound him.

OK, that’s a good one. I’m going to remember and use that in the future.
I bought my first gun this year. I got a Smith & Wesson 38 revolver. I decided since I was not very experienced, the revolver was a good choice. The number of things that can go wrong is not too many, it’s comfortable for me to shoot, the ammo is readily available.
Now that I have a little more experience, I want a 9 mm.
I will probably get some sort of shotgun when I get a little more experience.
I *will* get a concealed carry permit before the end of the year.
Practice with your gun - whatever you decide to get.
One gets a black eye when said person puts butt of gun against ones face.
yeah don’t say it!!! I actually am blonde.
It is that unrest that has settled over me. I have never quite felt this way.
Great post, neverdem...
Yep. Zero chance a dead perp is going to be able to hit you with a lawsuit. Also, dead perp’s family isn’t going to have much of a legal leg to stand on when the criminality of said perps actions cannot be disputed by dead perp themselves.
I first saw it on AR15.com. Who really knows where memes like that start though... For a great many of them, I am certain alcohol is involved. ;-)
Mr. Fricke is a prime example of what happens when a nation doesn’t have a draft.
