Obama calls for China, India action on climate

US president Barack Obama Wednesday said he would be pushing for greater efforts by emerging economies on global warming at coming climate talks in South Africa, which he warned would be a "tough slog".

Obama described Australia's carbon tax, passed into law last week, as a "bold strategy" to tackle pollution and said he would be advocating that countries like China and India take greater responsibility at Durban.

"The advanced economies can't do this alone, so part of our insistence when we are in multilateral fora, and I will continue to insist on this when we go to Durban, is that if we are taking a series of steps then it's important that emerging economies like China and India are also part of the bargain," he said.

"It doesn't mean that they have to do exactly what we do, we understand that in terms of per capita carbon emissions they've got a long way to go before they catch up to us, but it does mean that they've got to take seriously their responsibilities as well," he told reporters on a trip to Australia.

Those countries are not stupid. They do not want excessive burdens on their industry. They want more jobs, not less.

Australia’s new carbon tax was not a “bold strategy” to tackle pollution; it was and is just one more way for the government to take more of the people’s money so they can redistribute the wealth.

Sure, insist that everyone else join us in our enviro-cult movement and behave just as irrationally. Never mind that these are emerging economies that are finally moving millions of their people out of poverty into some semblance of a reasonable life - it's far more important that we keep them in squalor so Laurie David, Al Gore and Leo DiCaprio can feel like they accomplished something as they take their private jets to their next environmental summit/lavish party.

Time to stop beating a dead horse.
Climategate was a long time ago.
Tens of thousands of scientists have said that AGW is a hoax.

Give it a rest Obama. Or else join Gore when the men in the white coats come along to wherever they put people who think it's “millions of degrees” beneath the earth's surface

What a dunce. Has he forgotten Copenhagen? The leaders of these nations met without him, and he had to intrude in order to speak to them. He is irrelevant to them.
