Given advances in technology, the current educational model is hopelessly obsolete and obscenely inefficient. Of course, as long as it functions primarily as state-run day care, it won't change.

And teacher certifications are just another subsidy for Big Education, along with higher pay for useless advanced degrees. Half of the students in my graduate courses were elementary school teachers who wanted a raise.

I would definitely do away with the standard K through 12 model of schooling. I’m not sure it was ever a good idea.

My great grandmother graduated from a 1 room schoolhouse in the 9th grade and got a better education than I did in the modern schools. She could recite the constitution and declaration of independence, spoke fluent latin and do complex algebra. All learned from a teacher who probably had zero certification.
