Unemployment is at 9%, the housing market is moribund, "consumer confidence" is an oxymoron and three-fourths of Americans believe the country is on the wrong track. So how is it that President Obama leads each of his likely Republican opponents in the polls? And why on earth is the gap widening rather than closing?
It's simple: Voters are paying attention to what the GOP field is saying not just the applause-line attacks on Obama but what the candidates propose to do about the economy. The more they talk, the more discouraged the electorate seems to become.
This should be the Republicans' election to lose. They seem well on their way.
An NBC-Wall Street Journal poll last week showed Obama beating Mitt Romney his most formidable opponent by a six-point margin, 49% to 43%. That is not a huge advantage, but the trend is in Obama's favor. Last month, the same poll had the president leading Romney by just two points; in August, Obama was only one point ahead.
Surveys show Obama basically wiping the floor with anyone else. A couple of months ago, the GOP was able to take solace in the fact that in a hypothetical match-up between Obama and a generic, unnamed Republican, polls showed the president narrowly losing. But the most recent surveys show that Obama has pulled even with "Not Obama" and perhaps nosed into the lead.
What the Republican field has utterly failed to do is develop a convincing narrative about the economy. The candidates act as if widespread disappointment with the performance of Obama and the Democrats will be enough to win the election. But voters are being given every reason to suspect that GOP policies will make things worse.

If they don't like freedom then they should all move to North Korea and see if they can do what they want
Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but just about 50% of Americans pay no federal income taxes and are more than happy to vote themselves more of your money
The good news is that there is still an electoral college. I could definitely see Obama doing a Gore winning the raw vote while losing electorally.
This is where these endless left-wing moderated debates can really be a problem. Eventually, a candidate is going to say something stupid or freeze up, and the press has a field day with that sound bite (something they would never do with Obama or Biden). The constant drum-beat wears on the electorate after a while.
How many more of these stupid debates do we have to endure?
I believe it too.
The electorate is incredibly stupid. I fear we may be too far down the road of govt handouts to recover.
Really? Why don’t you dig into Obummers polling a bit. He is losing on all points in the polls. Nothing above 50%. This is wishful thinking for radical leftists, racists like Eugine. There is never any real polling until there is a candidate that is chosen.
Eugene Robinson. Enough said.
Here’s all the Republicans need to say and do:
“Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?” Repeat as often as necessary.
“If you voted for Obama to probe you weren’t a racist, you need to vote for someone else this time to prove you’re not an idiot!” Repeat as often as necessary.
When Obama’s dumpster divers and media minions come up with manufactured dirt to besmirch Republican reputations, Republicans should do a little dumpster diving of their own and talk about Obama’s fraudulent credentials, questionable background, foreign sponsors, homosexual relationships, drug use, multiple social security numbers, and suspended law license. If they can find the smoking gun - something like an incriminating photo, it would suddenly be all over for Obama. Someone, somewhere, knows something. Sheriff Joe is on it.
Does anyone have a background on this robinson lunatic?
“Unfortunately all too many Americans want to hear that the government is going to take care of them and solve all our problems.”
The Indians and Black Folks present a perfect illustration of how Government care actually works out in practice. The Indians live on the reservation and the black folks live on the Democrat plantation. Poverty and degradation are the inevitable results of Government paternalism.
We see through the media. Its just too bad so many people are still influenced by them.
Yes they have. My sister pointed that out to me the other day.
Somebody has rediscovered syllisybun mushrooms. LOL!
And I dont really see one on the horizon, though. Certainly not Newt.”
You’ve captured the problem. No one who appears likely to get the nomination at the moment has the cojones to do what is needed - and that is before we even consider Congress.
When I say “hard times”, I think that there will be massive civil unrest by the D base as their ability to live off the work of others is reduced or cutoff by economic catastrophe.
Poor Eugene. Al Sharpton took his place as MSNBC’s house negro. At least he still has his affirmative action Pulitzer Prize.
Gingrich is a terribly flawed candidate.
Newt fully supports the concept of Obama's individual health care mandate, for God's sake.
Do any of his supporters have an answer for that?
How does anyone expect him to beat Obama if the individual mandate is not opposed on the GOP side?
It's ludicrous. Jeez, talk about de-energizing the base.
The more I look at things, the more I think we are doomed unless Cain or Perry can get the nomination.
I don't know about other voters, but I, for one, am not going to vote for a candidate who embraces such Tyranny.
Under such an interpretation of the Commerce Clause, the State has virtually unlimited power to control and enslave us.
I like Newt a lot for his historical knowledge and as a debater and Patriot, but I can't imagine what he is thinking by supporting the individual mandate. It's madness.
The media are proving once again that they still have the power to destroy GOP candidates with the flimsiest of effort. I think they are still toying around with Herman Cain as a test run for whoever gets the GOP nod (with the possible exception of Romney, who would probably be OK with them if he turns black.)
Its already started, and we have Obama in office; can you imagine what happens under Romney ?
Nevertheless, with Obama in power he will jack up taxes and spending will approach 30 % of GDP, and the deficit will widen. Our decline will accelerate exponentially. I will never vote for or accede to that malevolent idiot; I just cant do it. We'll have to go with who ever we have, damn the torpedos.
Newt Gingrich has fully repudiated his embrace of the individual mandate, and I am greatly relieved at that fact.
Even though several issues remain with him, maybe Newt will be a viable candidate after all.
