I’m not a sports fan, and I don’t know how the league is set up.

But I heard last night that the most recent deal had fallen through and the players were voting to decertify their union.

Is there some reason that the owners then couldn’t negotiate one-on-one with the individual players to continue the season and bypass the (decertified) union?

Yes. The owners are terrified of free markets.Almost all the rules are designed to prevent the owners having to compete financially for the players.
