Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he strongly supports a federal mandate requiring citizens to buy health insurance a position that has been rejected by many Republicans, including several who likely will be running against him for the Republican presidential nomination.
Appearing on NBCs Meet the Press, Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.
Gregory played a clip of Gingrich speaking during an appearance on Meet the Press in October 1993:
I am for people, individuals -- exactly like automobile insurance -- individuals having health insurance and being required to have health insurance. And I am prepared to vote for a voucher system which will give individuals, on a sliding scale, a government subsidy so we insure that everyone as individuals have health insurance.
Gregory asked Gingrich if he would criticize GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney, whose "Romneycare" health program enacted during his time as Governor in Massachusetts mandated that all uninsured purchase health insurance.
Gingrich replied he would not make it an issue in the campaign and said he agreed with key aspects of Romneycare.
"I agree that all of us have a responsibility to pay--help pay for health care," Gingrich said, adding, "I've said consistently we ought to have some requirement that you either have health insurance or you post a bond ..."

Newt Gingrich Responds to Controversy
This is from 5/18 a few days after his infamous David Gregory interview.
SCOTUS is one big fat joke. I have zero respect for them anymore. They don’t follow the law they follow their party. Kagan the bull $#%# has NO BUSINESS voting on this, she should recuse herself but she won’t.
Thank you for the refutation, this is a bump to study it later.
That seals his fate alone regardless of any other outstanding skill.

SNIFF SNIFF.....Sign up date 11/11/2011 .....Welcome to FR. Member for ONE whole day before you sign up to bash Gingrich. Do you bash Cain under your old or other screen name?
This gets me to thinking that perhaps Newt is not the conservative I thought he was turning towards. How can he as a believer in the Constitution think health insurance is more of a national matter then a drivers license as a matter for national and individual freedom? Allowing individuals a federal to obtain health insurance is much different than mandating all individuals have some form of government sponsored insurance. If I don’t drive I don’t need auto insurance.
He realized he’d be sunk if he did not walk that back. And he is lying about what transpired with David Gregory; it wasn’t only the clip from 93, it was his current statement on the day of the interview as well.
You can always vote for Obongo, no worries then, he’s not a real conservative or more conservative, he’s just a plain old Marxist and that’s always better. With people like you I have resigned myself to the fact that we will have 4 more years and if we don’t take the Senate America is 100% screwed.
How’s it going, pissant?
Nope. I signed up because I saw Cain being hammered by Fib Newtons and wanted to respond.
I suspect mean ogre doesn’t care about that, I think his sign up date and the fact that he posted this proves what his agenda is. I smell a rat.
Bingo!
Ok, time will tell. I’ll take you at your word for now.
Sure she would, but she’s not running is she? So the question is, which candidate is a vast improvement over the halfrican Marxist Muslim loving Kenyan homo? The answer is all of them. ANYONE BUT OBONGO.
My preference is Bachmann, followed by Cain, Perry, Santorum, Newt, Paul, Huntsman, Johnson, Roemer, that gay guy in CA, then Romney, in that order. Any would be better than Obama, but that isn’t saying much.
LOL
Where is Sarah Palin now that we really need her?
I was so much nicer in the old days, when n00bs couldn’t start threads. We’re just leaving ourselves wide open to campaign hacks and trolls now.
Actually, fox just ran a commercial saying she was going to be doing On The Record, I think tomorrow, to talk about her “pick.” I don’t know what that means, but its got my attention.
Patience.
We are prevailing.
