Cult! A Classic False Claim
Mormon Defense League ^ | October 9, 2011 | Mormon Defense League

Some public figures have labeled the “Mormon” church as a “cult”. Most recently, ABC News reported that Dallas Pastor Robert Jeffress applied such a label in an interview following a political gathering where Jeffress introduced a political rival to Mormon candidate Mitt Romney.

Use of such a term to describe Mormonism is highly offensive to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “Cult” carries the connotation of dangerous, even violent groups whose beliefs are irrational and whose practices are immoral and lawless (Koresh and the Branch Davidians, Heaven’s Gate, Aum Shinrikyo, and The People’s Temple are all prominent examples) . The term cannot be applied to Mormons unless it is so broadly defined that its use could be applied to virtually any religious body.

Like racist language, the use of the word “cult” to describe a religion usually tells us very little about the religion, but a great deal about the person using the word. In short, it tells us only that the person using the label “cult” doesn’t like the religion in question, or thinks it is illegitimate. Bryan Wilson, a Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, and a noted sociologist of minority religions noted:

Interesting link. Thanks

A young ex-Mormon joined our church some years back and as we got to know him, he opened up about the LDS. I had no reason to doubt him. I think I was most astonished over the belief of some of the men becoming gods eventually.

If I ever heard that in a church teaching, I wouldn’t need any help at all in realizing I needed to head for the door; not to mention all the other bizarre, anti-Biblical, anti-Christian things they have made up.

I get so annoyed but mostly I feel bad for these people. I really do. Many know nothing else as they were born into it. It makes me ever so thankful that Jesus led me in the Truth.

Hardly BM, you know the deal and in this case the source was cited. Just because you can’t get it on the internet doesn’t make it any less of a source. And you know the deal about your posting record - how many times have we had to challenge you for sources that just never seem to show up in any of your replies.

I find it fascinating that when an lds person relates personal experiences about how horrible Christian churches are we are to accept them with out question, yet if I relate an experience as related to me by my lds family and friends it is implied and easy enough to infer that I am a liar.
Really why would my lds family and friends lie about their experiences with mormonISM as they are still there and these things to an outsider put the lds group in a bad light. A head shaker to be sure.

It was referring to all your victimhood garbage and offense and the fact that we true Christians are entitled to be equally offended by your beliefs

If Romney as POTUS were as mealy mouthed and weak as the mormons we encounter on FR, he would roll over at the first sign of aggression against the US and whine "you aren't being NICE to me".

Good point. I hadn’t looked at it that way.

I’m sort of curious about the psychological aspect of a person (in this case, a Mormon) that would initiate a thread that by design is meant to evoke opposition and then cry foul from the outset.

I’ll take the merciful view. It’s a cry for help. :)

No matter how bizarre, out of this world, not corroborated by history genetics or linguistics Mormon theology is - that does NOT make it a cult.

A cult wants everything its members have. If you had a van, now the cult has a van. If you had a 50 cal machine gun - the cult now has a 50 cal machine gun.

Mormons only want 10%.

;)
