The TITANIC stuff was like, “Whaa...?” If you lopped those paragraphs off the beginning and end, the thing would be a third shorter.
I skimmed those first couple of paragraphs. I do that for at least 90% of these sorts of articles now. The writers try to link their story to some pop culture object to show how their story, like, connects to the zeitgeist, ya know? I just skim until the second or third paragraph. Then I skim a little slower. By the last paragraph I was like, ‘Yeah, Kate Winslet, whatever, man...”
Argument by analogy betrays a weakness of fact and logic but argument by analogy to pop culture betrays ignorance of history and even a tenuous grasp on reality.
