Herman Cain, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, has hired a high-profile defamation lawyer to keep an eye on the sexual harassment accusations made public by two women this week.
Atlanta attorney Lin Wood told Reuters Thursday he was not hired to scare, intimidate or threaten anyone from making statements, but to monitor the accusations against Cain and respond accordingly.
Wood, a top libel and defamation lawyer, was hired on Monday morning when it became clear that Sharon Bialek was about to become the first of four women alleging inappropriate behavior by Cain to go public with her accusations.
"I would certainly at some point and time give him my legal evaluation of whether any of these particular statements are potentially actionable," Wood said
Wood said he was retained by Cain and not by his campaign. He said he feels strongly about "guilt by accusation" cases. "I have seen how it has devastated the lives of other clients of mine and I would hate to see it happen to Mr. Cain."

Hey folks, help us out. I don’t know ANYTHING about Lin Wood. Can anyone enlighten us as to his creds?
Your Post #14: Excellent
He should invite the Clinton victims to tell the public what real sexual assault cases sound like.
You disgust me. Now you’re making up stuff.
Good grief, we’re all conservatives but you have been ugly in nearly every comment you’ve made lately.
Everybody hates lawyers............ until they need one.
What are you nutz? I had to read your comment several times to even compute?
I’m having a little trouble understanding what Imus’s producer has to do with all this, but what he said is pretty funny.
Maybe he can lure Corzine into one of his famous 90-mph-with-no-seatbelt mad dashes up the NJ Turnpike.
Look at Bimbo’s face on post #13. Lying, crazy beach is practically stamped on her contorted mask of a face.
Actually I haven’t been posting until this evening.
I’ve been thinking today about after spending all my life interested in politics and the future of America, maybe it’s time to just move on to something else, like gardening.
The U.S is teetering on the precipice of total destruction.
The most dangerous man ever to inhabit the WH, intent on destroying the America I love...And what are the Tea Party,Conservs, and Repubs hell bent on doing?
Putting a known coreless , say whatever to get elected fraud in the WH, with a VP that is nothing more than a con-man, inexperience and unqualified. It is stomach churning. But if that is the tickic, I will NOT vote. I will not be a party to sending America over the cliff. At that point it will not matter who is in office we will be finished as the last best hope for the world.
Talk about bringing a thermonuclear weapon to a knife fight.
The naughty librarian look. Why would Herman Cain have even gone for that? Bow wow!
As did I!
Sarah Palin would have been wise to do the same after quitting the job of Governor in Alaska!
I have three questions that perhaps the female FReepers can help me with:
I like to know why Bialek hugged a man who she now remembers as a sexual aggressor. Ladies, if a man tries to grope you and then you meet him again 14 years later, would you not maintain a physical separation from him?
And, if the point in meeting him was to ask if he “remembered what he did”, wouldn’t you ask that question loudly enough to perhaps embarrass him, rather than whisper it in his ear?
Finally, while I have no problem looking at well-endowed ladies, if you were going on national TV to discuss an allegation of gropery, how much cleavage would be appropriate to display?
Added Wood, Ive been brought in to bring an element of fairness to the accusations being brought against Mr. Cain.
Wood gained legal fame representing Jewell, the security guard suspected by law enforcement of being involved in the 1996 Centennial Park bombing, which led to two deaths. Jewell sued The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other news media.
The libel suit against the AJC was dismissed by the trial court. An appeal by Jewells estate is pending.
Woods reputation, as a fierce and tenacious advocate in the courtroom and in front of TV klieg lights, has brought him a host of celebrity cases.
He was pretty good at scaring CNN, NBC and the New York Post into quick settlements in the Jewell case, said Atlanta lawyer Jack Martin, who originally represented Jewell during the criminal investigation. I wouldnt be surprised if he employs a scorched-earth policy here.
That observation came from Steve Sadow, another Atlanta lawyer, who calls Wood the best libel/defamation lawyer in the country.
Wood, 59, has the track record, working different sides of highly charged cases involving Richard Jewell, JonBenet Ramsey, Kobe Bryant and U.S. Rep. Gary Condit.
and all that is in the Atlantic Constipation Constitution
Now I understand why Allred was so off her game tonight on Hannity!
I hope you are right. My first thought was quite different. I just hope this is not an indicator that more women are expected to come forward.
Good plan, ace.
I believe in watching this unfold that she may have wanted a Monica Lewinsky moment to set the stage--just as Hannity asked Allred why Bialek remained in the car with him after the alleged abuse instead of jumping out--there are cabs all over DC..Allred said DC was unsafe.
Fox News has pushed Romney, Romney, Romney all day, never calling Cain the front runner one time. Disgusting. .
The media did the same for Ronald Reagan. Herman Cain is in good company. Go Cain!
That's an awful lot of quarters...are there enough hours in a night? *<];-')
FoxBusiness was talking about Cain being the frontrunner, tonight.
