Yup. Same as 1 BIG mistake.
A couple weeks ago I was having dinner with some friends who are not all that well aquatinted with college football. I explained to them who Paterno was and stated the he was the only upstanding coach in the top tier of NCAA football.
I bragged about his high graduation rates, his donations to Penn State etc, etc.
I’m not a Penn State fan, but have always had great respect for that program.
And no it comes out that he knowingly harbored a boy f’er!
The gravity of this scandal is so great that Penn State should take the additional step of canceling the remainder of their season.
Rioting for the sake of rioting. Just like the OWS, protesting for the sake of protesting. No real message, no real ideas. They just want to bring back the 1960’s. This is Obama and the Left’s fault.
I remember that!
what is tragic is the fact he thought it ok to “sleep on” reporting the rape of a 10 year old CHILD. and even more tragic that you think that was ok.
I, even being a weakling female, would have played Lorena Bobbit and let him bleed to death BEFORE I called the police.
no, one day after one day after another....times 4745.
birds of a feather flock together comes to mind. nothing else explains your staunch support
“This is exactly like Duke where they are making knee jerk decisions. Joe did the right thing at the time with what was given to him. A grad student went to him about a possible situation and he went to the Athletic Director who went to the school who investigated and found NOTHING to it. How do we know that this is all a lie and the parents are trying to get money from the school.”
Bull. With PSU, a three year investigation culminated in sworn, consistent grand jury testimony from multiple witnesses, resulting in an indictment. The witnesses, including Paterno, admit that in 2002, McQueary - who had no motive to lie - reported the rape incident to them. According to you, they “did the right thing”: None of them called police, but left Sandusky with access to the facilities for another 9 years.
With Duke, there was no corroboration; no consistent story; and no admissions.
There WERE: alibis; an illegal photo array made up only of Duke players; and an elected prosecutor going before the media and lying about the evidence, when he knew there was no DNA match to anyone on the team. The players vigorously denied the charges and offered to take lie detector tests, but the police refused. The accuser was bipolar; had taken anti-psychotic meds; and had a history of bringing similar, unsubstantiated charges.
So how are the cases exactly alike? Because they both involve Division 1 college sports teams with blue and white uniforms?
College kids are emotional, not quite yet humans. That said, I hope the day comes when these kids realize the poor choices they are making supporting Paterno.
I believe once the dust settles, there will be no doubt Paterno was COMPLETELY enmeshed in a cover-up to protect the reputation of Penn State and his own legacy- all at the expense of a bunch of innocent children. Pitiful.
He “heard a rumor”? Are you serious? This man was told by one of his own graduate students that he saw one of Paterno’s coaches BUTT-RAPING a 10-year-old boy!!!
Are you insane?
This wasn’t a rumor! It was a first hand account!
What if this had been Joe Paterno’s grandson in the shower with that animal? Do you think for a minute Paterno would have handled it differently? You bet your last buck he would have.
Why did this child deserve ANY less help? Paterno may have fulfilled his obligation according to “policy”....but he was a total moral failure.
For years, Paterno has taught young people to do MORE than just the MINIMUM in all areas of their lives. At the time he was likely needed the most, Paterno did just the minimum. And I believe we will eventually see, he was very involved in keeping the entire matter quiet.
Given the action of the trustees, I can assure you, we are about to hear even more disturbing allegations about Paterno’s involvement. They know more than we do. Watch.

Your a jerk. That statement is vulgar. I don’t appreciate being called a child rapist you freak.
Well I am done with this story. It has been in the news way too long. Time to wrap it up and get on with life. It is getting boring.
Even if that is so, his firing was absolutely the right thing to do. It was a culture that had to be changed.
Firing Joe Paterno will not do much to ease the plight of the victims, but letting him finish the out the schedule would have added to their suffering, IMO.
Letting Penn State finish out the schedule, period, will add to their suffering....these games are going to be circuses.
“If he had reported it to campus police, that would have been totally fine. (they are real police at PSU, BTW). Reporting to the Athletic Director not fine.”
It was reported to campus police because Schultz supervised the campus police. Schultz was however indicted for perjury so this should tell you where the blame really lies (aside from McQueary for not calling the cops on the spot, and of course Sandusky if proven guilty).
I can’t argue against that.
A convenient way to say your defense was absurd.
Furthermore, what is this ANIMAL Mike McQueary doing being allowed to take the field and COACH for Penn State this week?
He was 28-years-old and SAW that animal raping that child!! He did NOTHING to stop it! Instead he went to his Dad’s house and then told Paterno the next day!
I’m a father of 3 sons who are about the age that McQueary was at the time of the rape. I can assure you, any of the three of them would have picked up a bat and beaten that pervert senseless had they witnessed such a thing!
You talk about moral failures!!! How can this University let these morally devoid men continue to represent them?
Penn State is becoming a malignancy.
As I said, yes. The nature of this crime is such that the police should be called immediately.
This is especially true if a crime, especially against a person, is in progress.
That said, I agree with another article I read this morning where the author posed the question, basically, "call the police, how about step up, pull the perp off the victim and rip his head off, then call the police." If possible.
Another situation where carrying would come in handy.
Warrior- I agree.
So in your mind anyone under the age of 25 isn’t really a human being? You sound like a pro-abort lefist. Now, the frontal lobes of most college students aren’t fully developed, but they’re still human beings.
