Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.
The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.
But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.
One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

Right. As if PSUs liability is now diminished with these firings. You know as well as I do that the lawsuits are going to be vast, and that the trustees themselves are still not out of the woods yet. All the firings did today was a little bit of CYA in the hopes of slowing the carnage before it hits their doorsteps. This is yet another reason why people here should be at least a tiny bit skeptical about these immediate firings. THINK, instead of feeling your way through the issue, just for a few minutes! It won’t hurt. I promise.
I believe so far, we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg.
Why, you ask? Why?!!!
Are you effing serious?!!!
A ten-year-old boy is sodomized by a serial homosexual child-rapist and all you care about is the "inordinate" punishment (mere firing) of those who turned a blind eye to this assault and failed to report it to the police?!
Are you effing for real?
Paterno is still alive...nobody's boiled him in a pot...yet...
Liberty? He's not behind bars; and no charges have been filed against him...he's free to roam like us...but hey, he'll need a ticket to get in the game...like us...Certain rights belong only to CURRENT coaches.
Property? What? Has somebody already sued him and won? Even then, that would be due process, wouldn't it?
Even if you could make it stick that Paterno has somehow lost liberty, even you just posted: "A public employees liberty interest can be triggered by a discharge under certain publicly stigmatizing circumstances."
I'd say these were "publicly stigmatizing circumstances," wouldn't you?
As for the underlying point of quoting that, are you claiming that football coaches & university officials with contracts are unfire-able? You're not claiming that little diddy, are you?
ESPN Live:
Cops now spraying mace on unruly crowd members.
Grad student’s report didn’t happen till ‘02. First investigation was at the behest of a parent in ‘98, Sandusky retired shortly after that after Paterno denied him the head coach job.
I hear you Big Red... well voiced.
I have to wonder whom you’ve enabled in your storied unionized career.
After the police are finished there, they should head on down to Zuccoti Park.
No we can't trust them, because there's been plenty of news stories in recent years, of cover-ups of sex abuse committed by teachers in schools in this country.
LJ, few here are condemning the molester. They are attacking the “enablers” (with very little understanding of who knew what and when). That is what I am referring to. Slow down and read. Again, one of my main points is that few even know the molesters name.... Everyone is talking about McCreary and Paterno. Neither has ever touched a child as far as anyone knows... And yet they are being vilified nearly universally. That is wrong, in my opinion. What they did (potentially failed to report ENOUGH) is NOTHING compared to what happened to the children. Why is it that the admins are getting hit first and harder than Sandusky so far? That is a question that should be addressed. Now do you understand what I’m talking about?
Arrest them expell them and shut the program down yesterday.
Round I of investigations: 1998
Round II of investigations: Late 2008 or early 2009-->last week
Round III of investigations: Once this story brook, resulting in more forthcoming victims
It seems that for most posting here, the investigation began with this mornings breaking news.
Well, of course. But if you're really a teacher, how in the world could you possibly discount the ability of a student to get VERY up to date on a subject in a short period of time due to the internet?
You express yourself as if we still lived in the days of Encyclopedia Britannicas...when it'd take a bit of time to "weed thru" sources and facts.
The Internet at times, yes, leads us to "pre-judge" something minus all the facts; but that doesn't mean it does so all the time, in every case.
You essentially have insulted our intelligence on this thread by discounting our ability to "catch up" in a hurry on a subject...provided we use MANY, MANY RELIABLE sources so that we can compare and contrast truth claims.
Thanks for pinging me to this thread. There are three horrible things.
1. The crimes committed by Sandusky or whatever his name is.
2. The obvious cover up - FOR YEARS - by a great many people (and the very possible pedophile crimes commmitted by others.).
3. The pooh-poohing of people ON THIS THREAD of vile crimes that deserve the death penalty. And that death penalty should happen as soon as he (or they) is found guilty.
Making light of sex crimes against children is beyond destructive and I am at a loss for words.
Ping me if that a**hole gets zotted. Sorry for language. I’m sick and angry.
if you could make it stick that Paterno has somehow lost liberty, even you just posted: "A public employees liberty interest can be triggered by a discharge under certain publicly stigmatizing circumstances
since these ARE publicly stigmatizing circumstances, Paternos liberty interests ARE at stake, as you just posted. Ergo, he can easily raise a potential claim that Due Process has been violated.
The admins, except Curley and Shultz, have only lost employment. The monster Sandusky has been indicted with 40 felony counts. I will settle for unemployment for the admins with Sandusky riding Old Sparky into the great beyond.
“So tell me why are the PSU folk getting far worse punishments than most other mandated reporters? And why so quickly?”
‘Success, with Honor’...
There was NO HONOR AT ALL in this situation, just CYA and denial.
ESPN reports minor rioting...satellite truck overturned, light poles down, police dogs loosed.
Still here. Never once said that the children didn’t go through something terrible. I’ve spent every post here focusing on why everyone BUT Sandusky is getting thrown under the bus, in a matter of hours. Sandusky raped children.... But we are all focused on a variety of other people. Not one person on this long thread has asked why Sandusky hasn’t been indicted yet! Doesn’t that make you stop and think for just one little tiny moment?
