I'm not defending Paterno in this matter. He obviously was very wrong, both in not following up on the incident, an in also ignoring, or denying years of behavior and rumors about Sandusky.

But he has also done some pretty decent things in his life.

In an era when coaches demand exorbitant contracts and get paid millons when they get fired, Paterno has for years signed contracts that are way under the value for a program such as Penn State.

He still lives in the same modest house on campus that he has for decades.

Paterno and his wife have donated millions to the University to endow academic ( NOT sports) related programs and scholarships.

He has definitely stayed too long as coach...he did not know when it was time to go....but these calls for summarily firing him are wrong. He should be allowed to finish out the season, then retire.

Many of the same peopel, and media sources, now calling for him to be summarily canned, were the same ones DEFENDING Michael Jackson against pedophilia charges...anyone see the hypocrisy here?

And look for the Nittany Lions to run the table...win out this season, and the Big 10 championship, AND win their BCS bowl...probably finish up at #6-8 final national ranking..

Yep, I pointed this out in an earlier post. If you are politically correct (Clinton or Michael Jackson) then the media can rationalize anything. If you aren't politically correct then the media will show their virility by taking you down. I wonder how long Herman Cain will be able to hold up to the media attacks that will multiply until they either take him down or expose the media is exposed as frauds.

I am a big football fan, and a long time admirer of Paterno until this week, so I have looked at this trying to give the benefit of the doubt to the athletic department and the university. That being said I’m sorry, but you are WRONG, WRONG, WRONG about Paterno.

All you need to know is that Paterno tolerated that monster remaining on his staff after he knew exactly what type of sick pervert he is. That in itself is grounds for immediate dismissal, and no amount of charity, or working below market rate can make up in even a small way for this complete lack of moral character.

The desire to delay this (and indeed the complete coverup since 2002) is rooted entirely in the belief that the football program is more important than criminal sexual abuse of children. That is the biggest indictment of Penn State and all the individuals involved, and I wouldn’t be sorry to see them all banned permanently from college football.

If there was some way that Paterno continuing could undo some of the damage or right some of the wrong, then maybe you’d have a point. But it can’t, so you don’t.

Wrong? Covering up child rape -- and allowing the rapist to roam on your campus with continued and ongoing access to kids thru the Second Mile Foundation for another half-dozen years was a "wrong" move?

You're pathetic. Taking a wrong turn with your car is "wrong." Bumbling some answer inaccurately is "wrong." Missing a test question is "wrong."

Covering up child rape is not simply a "wrong" decision, it was a daily decision made every day of his life since March of 2002 when he got the news as to what was going on...And even then, he probably knew what Sandusky was doing going back to 1998.
[For details, see...
* Attorney General press release
* Grand Jury Presentment]

But he has also done some pretty decent things in his life.

In light of what Jesus said...do you really think God "keeps score" in such a way as to what you're suggesting?

6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! (Jesus, Matthew 18:6-7)

...these calls for summarily firing him are wrong.

Wow! You are truly one of the most pathetic posters on FR!

Not only do we not hear a single word from you about these victims (no solidarity or identification from your keyboard of them) -- but we see you accusing the same moral "wrong"ness on those who call for Paterno's job as what Paterno did in this scandal!

Paterno was "wrong"...those who call for his firing are "wrong..." Somebody from another country or another planet would conclude that these people are all operating on the same moral plain...

I don’t buy any of this:
“In an era when coaches demand exorbitant contracts and get paid millons when they get fired, Paterno has for years signed contracts that are way under the value for a program such as Penn State.
He still lives in the same modest house on campus that he has for decades.
Paterno and his wife have donated millions to the University to endow academic ( NOT sports) related programs and scholarships.”

Its all about Paterno’s ego and desire to be the coach that wins and all that adulation...its not all about the money...
and he made plenty...

Greed and Hubris...a deadly duo.
Yeah..the “Great “ Paterno!
