The International Atomic Energy Agency, the UNs nuclear watchdog, will this week release a report on Irans nuclear activities. According to Western officials It will offer overpowering evidence that the Islamic republic has acquired and assembled the equipment and skills needed to build its first nuclear weapon. Details of the report have already begun to emerge. Here are the key points:
Iran is in the advanced stages of designing a nuclear explosive device small enough to fit in a warhead. Its indigenous design involves a so-called R265 generator, which is a spherical shell with explosives around the outside. The name could refer to the 265mm radius of the fissile hemispheres. Computer models for the warhead are configured in way that is not appropriate for civilian use but is entirely appropriate for a weapons programme, according to sources familiar with the IAEA report.
