Cain camp backs off Perry charge as new payout details emerge
Los Angeles Times ^ | 11/03/2011 | James Oliphant

That was fast: As part of its seemingly ever-evolving media strategy, Herman Cain’s campaign appears to have pulled the plug on blaming Rick Perry for the swirl of accusations surrounding the candidate.

“We want to move on with the campaign. Let’s get over these things that don’t mean anything to the American public,” Mark Block, Cain's campaign manager, told Fox News’ Megyn Kelly on Thursday afternoon.

But that’s not about to become any easier. Politico reported Thursday that one of the women who accused Cain of sexual harassment during his time at the National Restaurant Assn. received a payout of $45,000 to settle the matter and keep quiet.

Previously, the New York Times reported that a second woman received a severance of $35,000—which for her was a year’s salary.

The Politico report would seem to again put Cain’s credibility at issue. He has said the woman’s complaint is one that he recalls, but has described it as “baseless” and first said she received a negligible “termination" settlement of perhaps two or three months' salary.

He later shifted his account, saying the amount could have been larger, perhaps six months’ salary.

Block appeared on Fox News on Wednesday evening and blistered the Perry campaign, accusing former Cain aide Curt Anderson, now in the Perry camp, of leaking details of the harassment allegations.

But Anderson, in a round of media interviews, denied knowing anything about the allegations and had nothing but good things to say about Cain.

“I didn't know anything about this. It's hard to leak something you don't know anything about, of course,” Anderson told CNN on Thursday.

Poor choice of words, Block.

Thank, “Mr. Elephant.”

The MSM is really trying to model this into a huge scandal.

I don’t see it.

Meanwhile, Bubba got to stay in the Oval Office after admitting that he had received sexual favors from a young lady not much older than his daughter.

OMG.

Only you and the Los Angeles Times think so.

The rest of us have already moved on.

Too little, too late, Block.

You’re in deep doo doo, don’t keep digging.

Been over to RealClearPolitics lately to look at the polls? Oh, and I understand that he’s raised about $2 million dollars since this “scandal” broke in Politico. Governors Romney and Perry might want to try and manufacture some kind of sex scandal about themselves. Just sayin’!

Oh, and Speaker Gingrich just passed Governor Perry in the polls.

Herman Cain’s campaign appears to have pulled the plug on blaming Rick Perry for the swirl of accusations surrounding the candidate.

How convenient. Smearing a fellow candidate is no big deal in Hermanville, apparently.

Oh? So Block can just smear a man whose whole livelihood relies on his integrity, Cain is right in on it too, and as it goes nowhere Cain and Block can just say "move on".

Cain and Block are lowlifes for this move. This was purposeful attempt to drag Perry down for something Cain should have already handled. He tried to shift focus to Perry and now that it's out he was lying its time to move on?

In their rushed attempt to change the story they could have destroyed Anderson's career if Anderson hadn't handled it so graciously. He gave all media outlets cart blanche to investigate his part in this mess.Only then did Block and Cain back off.

I don’t see that Block let up on Perry campaign, he let up on Anderson.

Christine ODonnell collected a lot of money too, now she's running around chasing reality shows or something, no?

So did Herb also lie about vetting his picadillos with Anderson, back during his failed 90’s campaign? Anderson says he found out about it all through Politico not from Herb. Serial lying going on here and I found Anderson convincing, far more than the Herb kabuki. This is the same guy who told us there were no skeletons in HIS closet coming forward. What a crock.

I am leaning towards Cain. That does not mean I won’t call out him or one of his aides when they say or do something stupid.

People who support certain other candidates have their panties in a twist over this, Cain supporters seem not to care. I think a lot of Americans these days understand that false allegations or at least overly sensitive women in the work place are not that uncommon. If people in Cain’s own party don’t form a circular firing squad (quite possible) I suspect this will blow over.
