OK. Now, I’ve used many a lawnmower on hundreds of lawns in my past, and have seen tens of thousands of fire hydrants in just as many lawns and streets and sidewalks.

But I’m still trying to figure out exactly what that supposedly “college-educated” US government employee was thinking when he used that analogy of “trying to attach a lawnmower to a fire hydrant” .... 8<)

It is analogous to "Shovelling shit against the tide ..."

I have to think of Alice in Wonderland:

`You couldn't deny that, even if you tried with both hands.'

`I don't deny things with my hands,' Alice objected.

`Nobody said you did,' said the Red Queen. `I said you couldn't if you tried.'

I think he meant it made no sense.

However, you could probably power a lawn mower from a fire hydrant. if you put a hydraulic motor in a riding lawnmower, and attached a long enough fire-hose — you could operate the mower with the hydraulic pressure from the hydrant. You would also be watering the lawn as you went along -- kind of a twofer. It makes about as much sense as some of the funded green energy projects — but, it might actually work.
