The well has been poisoned by the amateurish and inept e-cat demos.
The idea that cold fusion might exist is surely worth exploring and apparently many reputable scientists are but claiming the proof is in that a customer has been found is like saying finding a mark proves the three card monte game is honest.

Plus the outlandish hype of e-cat promoters invites the demand that it live up to claims made, an unlikely prospect.

The idea that cold fusion might exist is surely worth exploring

Muon catalyzed cold fusion has been accepted by science for over 50 years. The problem is it requires more energy than it produces. If any other type of cold fusion exists it probably has the same problem. Nickel fusing with hydrogen to create copper absorbs energy, for instance.
