Because when you only have seconds, they’ll be there in minutes.

In Norway, they have strict gun control laws, and the perp that killed dozens had 90 minutes to plink away at every kid he could see, and the cops weren’t there.

What could have been the outcome if one single individual could have made him take cover until the police arrived?

Norway is an example as to why people need to be responsible to themselves and their loved ones and should not rely on the police, unless they are already there.

My wife (late 60’s) and I (early 70’s) live on our secluded thirteen acre farm in a very rural area up in the mountains of the western part of the Republic of Panama. It is very difficult for a gringo to get a firearm permit here and it can take years. I have a BB pistol, for which no permit is currently required. It looks at a distance of about three meters something like a real pistol.

The roads are dirt and the nearest police station is about twenty KM away; they often have insufficient gasoline for their car. Our nearest neighbor is about three KM away by road. Were we attacked in our home, we would be on our own. Fortunately, we have security lights and three loud, large and loyal dogs who sleep on their own mattresses in our bedroom. They would alert us. Would my air pistol be sufficient to deter a burglar or worse? Our spray bottle of ammonia water? Pepper spray? I rather doubt it but since that’s all we can get we’d have to find out if such a situation presented itself.

Please, don’t allow it to be that way in the United States.

The police do not prevent crimes. Even when they know of someone who poses a potential threat, as in domestic violence cases, they cannot act until the crime has been committed. I guess that it could be argued that they prevent any future crimes once they arrest the perpetrator, but that's small comfort to the victim.
Murders, rapes and robberies are committed EVERY DAY in this country. I'm amazed that anyone can actually bring themselves to believe that all or any of these crimes can be prevented by the police. When was the last time you heard about the police preventing a crime? Bruce Willis only comes crashing through the door at the last minute to save your sorry a$$ in hollywood.

Next time you're in trouble,
Call the cops.
Call for an ambulance.
Order a pizza.
See who gets there first.

Why Should People Have Guns When We Have Cops

Because of the aspiring tyrants in the political class and social elites.

Why waste time explaining the obvious to an idiot who should be able to figure out the answer on his own?

Sheriff, if law enforcement is charged with protecting the public, then, then, then why should that not be sufficient? Why should folks have to go out and get guns and arm themselves if we've got cops?

And what do we see these cops usually doing? The ones round here can be found endlessly cruising busy streets i.e. the kind where street and property crime are rather low due to the presence of...everybody else. They're also fond of 4th Amendment bonfires i.e. DUI checkpoints. Meanwhile residences are burgled, drugs are sold, illegal immigrants pour in, etc.

We had surveillance footage i.e. our own mug shot of a burglar at a business. Someone stepped forward to identify him. The police took all this information and did...nothing. No arrest, no questioning.

Somehow when my life or the life of a loved one is in danger I don't think the police will be arriving in the nick of time.

Well the problem is that douchbags liek this “host”, along with neofeminsits and gun grabbers everywhere is the isistence that there is somethign unique about American society which leads to a higher propensity for rape, burglary, assault, battery and murder than, say for example, the UK, France, Canada, Holland or Spain. And therefore having guns doesnt correct how American society makes people become attackers and rapists, so there’s no point to having concealed guns.

So they cant understand that if you place the blame entirely on the criminals, it necessarily implies that having firearms is a necessity since no kind of change in our culture will eliminate or make neglegible the issue of sexual assault, burglery or any other kind of assault.

That is a pretty harsh thing to say about a woman who wrote the following line...

This Sheriff should be applauded and is absolutely correct in his suggestions.

It would be funny to see Craig Melvin show how calling the Police is the answer say when some maniac is attacking him with a ball bat. It would be an excellent news-piece he could give commentary as his attacker wails on his Liberal ass , well at least while he remains alive and conscious.

Because I can’t carry a cop.

Nor does your gun receive a salary, benefits and a pension, take sick days or take donut breaks, let alone have other calls to respond to while you're in trouble. In fact, you can buy a very nice gun made for concealed carry, plus a holster or two and a bunch of ammo for the weekly paycheck of a single cop.

No knock on (most) cops, but they simple cannot be everywhere at once (and I wouldn't want to be living in a society where anything close to that was the case).

These anti-gun libs have their heads up their rear ends (or just haven't had the misfortune of being mugged, etc. - which I certainly do NOT wish upon them or anyone else).
