Theyre going to come after me more viciously than they would a white candidate, Cain responded. Youre right. Clarence Thomas. And so, to use Clarence Thomas as an example, Im ready for the same high-tech lynching that he went through for the good of this country. Cain smiled broadly. Im ready for the same high-tech lynching.
What they tried to do to Clarence Thomas is what they did to Robert Bork. It’s not about race. If Cain were liberal or moderate, liberals and moderates would be thrilled with him. It’s his conservatism that is the problem.
Cain is playing the race card: They’re being so mean to him, he says, because he’s black. He should stop. America has come far in race issues; it would come farther yet if certain people did not insist on seeing society’s problems - or their own - through the prism of race.
