Cain Says He Opposes Abortion Without Exceptions SHANNON McCAFFREY
Republican Herman Cain on Sunday said he opposes abortion even in cases of rape, incest or when the life of the mother is at stake, contradicting previous statements in which he favored some exceptions.
The tough stand that Cain staked out during an interview with CBS' "Face the Nation" comes as he tries to clear up his position on an issue closely watched by social conservative and evangelical voters, who are among his strongest supporters.
In a 1998 interview with Nation's Restaurant News, the former pizza executive described himself as "pro-life with exceptions, and people want you to be all or nothing."
In a recent interview with CNN, he said the government should not tell women what to do in cases of rape and incest. Afterward, his campaign issued a statement saying he was "100 percent pro-life." It did not specifically mention whether he supported any exceptions.
The no-exception position is considered the most rigid in the anti-abortion community. Even some who oppose abortion support exceptions in extreme circumstances such as when the mother's life is at risk. Cain told CBS he's "pro-life from conception, period." Asked whether that includes instances of rape, incest and life of the mother, Cain said, "Correct. That's my position."
He also endorsed a controversial theory linking abortion to racial genocide. Cain said Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger wanted to eradicate minorities by putting birth control clinics in their neighborhoods, a charge that the group denies.
Cain said 75 percent of the organization's abortion facilities were built in black communities.
"In Margaret Sanger's own words, she didn't use the word genocide, but she did talk about preventing the increasing number of poor blacks in this country by preventing black babies from being born," Cain said.

I’m sorry for your trouble. Another FReeper also mentioned ectopic pregnancy to me, which I suppose I never thought about as being a pregnancy, nor as an abortion, since in virtually all known human medical history, it results in the death of the baby. I suppose it’s a matter of how it’s looked at, and I never saw an unviable pregnancy of that type, to be an abortion. Thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate those who were willing to bring that up. Perhaps oneday we’ll be able to have artifical wombs (I know they have been working on this for many years), or into womb transplants in cases like that one you related, but we’re not there yet.
And thank you for the ping.
Just in one week he has taken many sides of the abortion issue.
This is am from theiowarepublican.com by Kevin Hall: "Im starting to think the commonly held belief of the Iowa Caucus being dominated by social conservatives is pure myth. How else do you explain the fact that the two Iowa frontrunners are complete flip-floppers on abortion and gay marriage, along with numerous other important issues? A lot of Iowa conservatives apparently put more stock into motivational speeches than they do principles, ethics, and our Founding documents, especially that pesky little line in the Declaration about life I admit, I fell into that rabbit hole of rhetoric early in this cycle, but The Caterpillar helped me come to my senses.
BTW, did you know Herman Cain flip-flopped on abortion again last week, for the 37th time? Five days after telling the crowd at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition forum his stance was no abortions, no exceptions, Cains campaign said he now supports abortion in the cases of rape, incest and life of the mother
Wait a few days. It will change again.
It is impossible to determine what Herman Cain believes about abortion. He takes all possible sides on the issue, and frequently. http://articles.cnn.com/2011-10-28/politics/politics_cain-abortion_1_herman-cain-abortion-rights-pro-life-candidate?_s=PM:POLITICS
“You do understand that your position (and Cain’s position, if it is indeed his actual position) is political suicide? Hope you enjoy four more years of Obama.”
I’m not willing to permit murder for your political expediency.
Cain is a pig in a poke, he has no record.
At this point, he can, and does, say anything he wants.
In the movie The Cardinal (based on a novel, but I don't recall the author's name), the sister of the future cardinal becomes pregnant out of wedlock and later it is the case that the only way to save her life is to crush the baby's skull--since she was not married the decision is up to the future cardinal and he has to tell them to save the baby and allow his sister to die.
I read somewhere that in this kind of situation, Jewish ethics would say to save the mother's life--but I don't know if that is true of all the different traditions of Jewish ethics (Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform).
normy, you are telling the truth. Cain did say abortion should not be part of the political discussion. Cain talks out of both sides of his mouth on abortion, as well as the Second Amendment.
This is misleading. Cain was referring to ADOPTION. This particular article does not say the statement applies to abortion, but it is implied.
Someday you will be reunited.
He also endorsed a controversial theory linking abortion to racial genocide.
I am Catholic and I follow the Church’s teaching on abortion. It is never permissible. Pat Buchanan, one my political heroes, was asked one time about these so-called rape inceptions. Speaking of allowing abortion in the case of rape, Buchanan said, “If you want to kill somebody for it, kill the rapist, not the child”. I don’t really trust any politician that believes it’s OK to murder an unborn child if they don’t like who the father, as in rape and incest. A committed pro-life advocate, that believes all life is sacred, calls these politicians not pro-life, but pro selective abortion, because that’s all they care. Rick Perry take this stance, but still says he is 100% pro-life. No he’s not. For eight years, when GW Bush was asked about his position on abortion, he would always say he believed in the “sanctity of life”. That is unless the pregnancy was caused by rape and incest, then he believed it was fine to abort the baby. His wife usually stayed quiet about abortion, but the minute Bush was no longer president she gets on every talk show she can and said she was pro-abortion and all the Bush women were, like that was something to be proud of. She also said she is for homosexual marriage.
Yes, I remember, but wouldn't that problem be discovered way before late term and a partial birth procedure?
Yes, I remember, but wouldn't that problem be discovered way before late term and a partial birth procedure?
My point exactly!. Bottom line--- it's just a phrase they use with no substance to justify abortion at any stage. Has noting to do with the life of the mother.
“...but the minute Bush was no longer president she gets on every talk show...”
In that case, I’ll have no respect for her positions but I give her some credit for the fact that I did not know them when she was first lady.
“Im not willing to permit murder for your political expediency.”
Even folks on our side are subject to the wiles of Convenience, by far history’s most prolific killer of Innocents.
Herman Cain
"As to my political policy view on abortion, I am 100% pro-life. End of story."
"I will appoint judges who understand the original intent of the Constitution. Judges who are committed to the rule of law know that the Constitution contains no right to take the life of unborn children."
"I will oppose government funding of abortion. I will veto any legislation that contains funds for Planned Parenthood. I will do everything that a President can do, consistent with his constitutional role, to advance the culture of life."
"I do not believe that abortion should be legal in this country if that is the question." - Herman Cain
Cain even takes conflicting positions on the Second Amendment and on TARP. http://theiowarepublican.com/2011/do-we-really-know-who-herman-cain-is/
Cain again this week tried to modify his stance on abortion. http://articles.cnn.com/2011-10-28/politics/politics_cain-abortion_1_herman-cain-abortion-rights-pro-life-candidate?_s=PM:POLITICS
