In the Philippines, the VP and Prez slots are independent so even if the prez wins, the VP could come from another party and both makes each others lives miserable as hell. Wished that were true in US elections.

That is true of governor and lieutenant governor in Texas and...the lieutenant governor has more power in some respects than the governor.

“VP could come from another party”
_____
That is the case in CA, for governor and lt. governor. It’s amusing sometimes, in that sometimes a governor can be afraid to go out of state, for fear the lt. gov. will pull a fast one in his absence. Can’t say it significantly helps CA, though.

When the Constitution was written, the offices of President and Vice President were first and second place. so the scenario you talk about could easily happen under the system designed. I do not know history well enough to know that did or did not happen. But I'm pretty sure at least one early administration was not thrilled with their VP; John Adams VP was Thomas Jefferson.

Article 2 Section 1 "...(The Electors shall meet in their respective States, and vote by Ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not lie an Inhabitant of the same State with themselves. And they shall make a List of all the Persons voted for, and of the Number of Votes for each; which List they shall sign and certify, and transmit sealed to the Seat of the Government of the United States, directed to the President of the Senate. The President of the Senate shall, in the Presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the Certificates, and the Votes shall then be counted. The Person having the greatest Number of Votes shall be the President, if such Number be a Majority of the whole Number of Electors appointed; and if there be more than one who have such Majority, and have an equal Number of Votes, then the House of Representatives shall immediately chuse by Ballot one of them for President; and if no Person have a Majority, then from the five highest on the List the said House shall in like Manner chuse the President. But in chusing the President, the Votes shall be taken by States, the Representation from each State having one Vote; a quorum for this Purpose shall consist of a Member or Members from two-thirds of the States, and a Majority of all the States shall be necessary to a Choice. In every Case, after the Choice of the President, the Person having the greatest Number of Votes of the Electors shall be the Vice President. But if there should remain two or more who have equal Votes, the Senate shall chuse from them by Ballot the Vice-President.) (This clause in parentheses was superseded by the 12th Amendment.)..."

At our Founding it used to be that way. And still is here in ILL-ear-noise(1). Gov and Lt Gov voted on separately.

(1) aka: Land of Mike Madiganistan and the City of Chicano, oops Chicago's, new 'Godfather' Rahm 'F YOU!' Emanuel. (creep's got a real potty mouth)

Read your history. We did vote separately in the beginning and it was an absolute disaster. We learned to do better.
