Libya has been liberated, so make way for the Islam-enforced polygamy. Wait, what?

Libya’s transitional government, established as a result of President Obama’s intervention, announced its first rulings Sunday following the death of deposed dictator Moammar Gadhafi. They include reestablishing polygamy for men and banning Western-style interest on bank loans.

Both provisions are features of Sharia, or Islamic law; Mohammed, Islam’s founder, introduced both some 1,400 years ago.

Interest free banking was quite common thousands of years ago. Mohammad should not be given credit for the invention. And polygamy? Mohammad PUT A LIMIT ON IT. He sure didn't invent it.

Just where do these people get their ideas about how they did stuff in the good old days when men were men and women were property?

BTW, for virtually all of the people in Libya this is not a "return to Sharia" ~ they never gave it up.

Ever since the fall of the Shah of Iran back in 1979 more and more of the secular Muzzie majority countries have been going back to their Islamic roots. Now we have Egypt and Libya turning that direction with the help of the Muslim Brotherhood. Next up is Syria.

The expansion of militant Islam and Sharia law isn’t something we should be concerned about.

It’s the mormons in the USA that threaten the end of the world as we know it.

I heard an interview with a Libyan woman today who explained what was going on with the polygamy change. She personally didn’t want to share a husband, but there are many women who need to.

A lot of Libyan men died in the fighting, leaving behind many widows who will be in bad financial straits without a husband, impoverished. And because the rules for polygamy in Islam are strict, that all wives must be treated equally, polygamy will provide support for them and their children.

The leader of the new government, who made this announcement, has backed away somewhat, which suggests that the policy has a purpose, and is not gratuitous.

A civilized country helps provide for its war widows and fatherless children, it doesn’t force them into creepy marriages. The country has plenty of money.

It’s only creepy from a modern western point of view, for them it is the traditional way of handling things.

It should also be noted that widowed women even in the US in the 19th Century, could often inherit only 1/3rd of their husband’s estate. And in Hindu India, starvation was such a certainty for widows that the practice of Suttee emerged, the widow throwing herself on her husbands funeral pyre, preferring a quick death.

In Libya, it should also be noted that marriage is generally not arranged, but voluntary, and as a nation they have both a high literacy rate and a large number of college graduates. So polygamy for a widow might be quite advantageous, even preferable to living alone on government relief.

Oh, quit it.

If it’s not creepy, then why stop at four wives or whatever? How about a thousand?

And how about one woman to a handful of men? That’s cool, too?

A marriage that’s not one man and one woman is just a multiple sexual relationship and may as well be anything.
